His first administration was marred by: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/27\/nyregion\/justice-department-gays-workplace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arguing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and losing at the U.S. Supreme Court for the right to discriminate against LGBTQ employees; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-fair-pay-lgbtq_n_58dd3c56e4b0e6ac709316ac?section=us_queer-voices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signing laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that undercut anti-discriminatory protections for LGBTQ contractors; deploying federal agencies to exclude and discriminate against transgender people seeking health care and housing, as well as baselessly banning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/transgender-military-ban-trump-administration-ban-on-transgender-troops-goes-into-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transgender troops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and <\/span><a href=\"\/trump-accountability-tracker\/#presidency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundreds of other actions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first 100 days of his second administration have been bolstered by an agenda supplied by <\/span><a href=\"\/project-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a plan for a rightwing takeover of the federal government led by the <\/span><a href=\"\/gap\/heritage-foundation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heritage Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that advocates for government policies reflecting a conservative Christian perspective, opposition to LGBTQ rights, restrictions on reproductive freedom, and the privileging of Christianity over other faiths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe start of this Administration has revealed an aggressively unAmerican agenda that has destabilized the economy, threatened personal freedoms, and attempted to censor accurate information and history,\u201d said GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLAAD has documented at least 255 attacks against LGBTQ people in policy and rhetoric since Trump took office on January 20th, adding to the 224 overall during the last nine years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among his first official acts was to sign executive orders targeting transgender people, spreading harmful and inaccurate rhetoric that ignores the existence of intersex people and centuries of gender diverse people across world cultures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/trump\">President Trump<\/a> also:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nominated vocally anti-LGBTQ advisors to his cabinet and other key positions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-executive-order-banning-transgender-athletes-womens-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discriminating against transgender students\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eliminated protections for LGBTQ people in federal policy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">censored accurate LGBTQ history and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/fda-staffers-told-that-woman-disabled-among-banned-words-white-house-says-its-an-2025-02-20\/#:~:text=Another%20federal%20health%20agency%20was,eliminate%20diversity%2C%20equity%20and%20inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resources<\/a> from government sites, including removing \u201ctransgender\u201d from the National Park\u2019s Stonewall National Monument Site, flagging content by keyword searching \u201cgay,\u201d &#8220;trans,&#8221; and &#8220;transgender,&#8221; including a photo of the historic WWII plane the Enola Gay and an Army engineer with the last name of Gay, and attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/fda-staffers-told-that-woman-disabled-among-banned-words-white-house-says-its-an-2025-02-20\/#:~:text=Another%20federal%20health%20agency%20was,eliminate%20diversity%2C%20equity%20and%20inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminate<\/a> two dozen words from external communications including &#8220;woman,&#8221; &#8220;disabled&#8221; and &#8220;elderly&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempted to defund HIV research<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested a gay asylum seeker without cause\u2014among two hundred other unlawful and unconstitutional arrests and removals to a prison in El Salvador<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempted deep cuts to programs supporting LGBTQ people domestically and abroad<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"\/trumps-trans-attacks-vs-economy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">address to Congress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March included 1,500 words targeting LGBTQ people (for a duration of eight minutes), and the remarks appeared near the top of his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/05\/nx-s1-5318127\/trump-congress-joint-address-longest-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historically long speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at the 15-minute mark. By contrast, Trump\u2019s focus on jobs and affordability came in at 975 words. A mere nine seconds comprised the subject of jobs, specifically about forcing federal workers back to the office.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_934553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-934553\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-934553\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/16144954\/720.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/16144954\/720.webp 1000w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/16144954\/720-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/16144954\/720-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/16144954\/720-150x113.webp 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/16144954\/720-450x338.webp 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-934553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andry Hernandez Romero, a gay makeup artist who came to the United States last year in search of asylum, is one of 238 Venezuelan migrants who were flown from the U.S. to a maximum security prison in El Salvador (Photo: Wilinton Barco\/Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lambdalegal.org\/newsroom\/pflag_us_20250304_federal-judge-grants-pi-against-trumps-anti-trans-healthcare-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in court blocking illegal attempts to hold funding for hospitals and providers, the Trump administration continues to spread inaccurate and inflammatory rhetoric about essential health care for transgender people, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/politics\/federal-fallout\/shuttered-cdc-webpages-return-with-new-warning-about-transgender-information-executive-order-donald-trump-gender-ideology\/65-40308516-0e5c-414d-96e1-cb55e5136e50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201cdisclaimer\u201d to Health and Human Services websites. The administration was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-cdc-fda-doctors-for-america-5263fc6b6cbc723ca0c86c4460d02f33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ordered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to restore data and other accurate scientific information about HIV and about LGBTQ people to sites for the CDC, FDA and Health and Human Services. It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawdork.com\/p\/read-ag-bondis-memo-purporting-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to baselessly threaten to criminalize care providers who prescribe longstanding best practices care to trans youth and adults. Every major medical association supports health care for transgender people and youth: statements <\/span><a href=\"\/medical-association-statements-supporting-trans-youth-healthcare-and-against-discriminatory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Rule of Law Holding, For Now<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional executive orders about LGBTQ people have been blocked in federal court as unconstitutional and overtly discriminatory. GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, \u201cLGBTQ organizations, alongside allies, have worked through the courts to uphold the Constitution and protect the fundamental rights that every American values: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thanks to the strong response from both the courts and the public, many of these attempts have been stopped. the judge <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-passport-policy-discriminates-against-transgender-people-judge-rules-2025-04-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;The Executive Order and Passport Policy are based on irrational prejudice toward transgender Americans and therefore offend our Nation&#8217;s constitutional commitment to equal protection for all Americans.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A threat to illegally withhold funding to schools that support diverse students was also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/documents\/preliminary-injunction-order-in-national-education-association-et-al-v-us-department-of-education-et-al\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blocked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the judge noting the threat \u201cis not warranted and plaintiffs\u2019 rights are of profound import.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACLU also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/dodea-book-bans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed suit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on behalf of students going to schools on military bases that saw books banned and removed recognition of cultural awareness dates including Pride month, Black History Month, Women\u2019s History Month and Hispanic American Heritage Month, a violation of students&#8217; First Amendment rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Additional research:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ and ally legal groups filed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lgbtqbar.org\/programs\/trump-executive-order-tracker\/?utm_source=National+LGBTQ%2B+Bar+List&amp;utm_campaign=1f29777668-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_12_20_08_01_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_77a4e778e1-1f29777668-236351592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and counting complaints against the Trump administration\u2019s executive orders, some within hours of executive orders being signed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wisconsin-supreme-court-elon-musk-81f71cdda271827ae281a77072a26bad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wisconsin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> voters sent a clear message to the administration and its biggest donor, Elon Musk, rejecting anti-trans campaign ads and texts, to elect Susan Crawford to the state Supreme Court.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out LGBTQ and ally lawmakers moved to protect basic liberties and rights as well as block harmful and illegal executive action. Arizona\u2019s Attorney General <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azag.gov\/press-release\/attorney-general-mayes-sues-trump-administration-defunding-medical-and-public-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kris Mayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Michigan Attorney General Dana <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/ag\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/04\/04\/attorney-general-nessel-sues-trump-administration-to-protect-libraries-and-museums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nessel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and dozens of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/2025\/attorney-general-james-stands-transgender-youth-against-discriminatory-executive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ally AGs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have moved to stop the illegal attempt to ban essential health care for transgender people, end illegal and destructive actions from the so-called DOGE and protect taxpayer data and privacy, stop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/system\/files\/attachments\/press-docs\/New%20York%20et%20al.%20v.%20Trump%20et%20al.%20Compl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegal impoundment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of funds for health research and other Congressionally-appropriated funds for the arts and libraries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Democratic U.S. Senator voted to block a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/senate-democrats-block-bill-ban-transgender-athletes-womens-sports-rcna194623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to advance a harmful sports ban for transgender people. All but two Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/14\/politics\/house-vote-ban-transgender-athletes-womens-sports\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted against<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the House\u2019s sports ban.
