Younger Latine people are more likely to identify as LGBTQ, and with over 62 million Latines in the US alone, <\/span>it is crucial to celebrate and amplify inclusive media<\/span><\/a> that represents the wide range of Latine experiences. Here are just a few examples of creative projects doing just that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Film<\/h3>\n
Ponyboi<\/h5>\n

Ponyboi, <\/span>the first feature<\/span><\/a> written by and starring an out intersex person, Salvadoran-American filmmaker and activist <\/span>River Gallo<\/span><\/a>, is coming to theaters June 27. The film follows a young intersex sex worker on the run from the mob after a drug deal gone wrong. Over the course of a chaotic Valentine\u2019s Day in New Jersey, <\/span>Ponyboi <\/span><\/i>promises to tell<\/span><\/a> \u201ca raw and riveting story of identity, survival, and chosen family.\u201d The film co-stars <\/span>Dylan O’Brien<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Victoria Pedretti<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Murray Bartlett<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Indya Moore<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gallo spoke with Out<\/span><\/a> about the film’s message and why intersex stories are more important now than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I mean, there couldn’t be a better time for an intersex movie like this because the reality is, the right is pushing this agenda of a false idea of gender and of sex,” they say. “I think it’s up to us, up to the queer community, to embolden and empower ourselves and to uplift intersex people so that we realize that these anti-trans bills are actually also anti-intersex, and that intersex rights and trans rights are actually one and the same rights. It’s a battle of autonomy, but it’s not something we’re talking about,”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gallo adds. “I really do think that the movie has this beautiful intersection of conversations about what it means to be trans and what it means to be intersex, what it means to just question your identity in general, and what it means to know that we all have choice in what we decide to do with our bodies. Even if that choice was taken away from us when we were younger or by a politician or by a government, we all actually do have autonomy over our bodies, and that’s a very sacred ownership.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
