Taylor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, April 22, the Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments in a case brought by six parents in Montgomery County, Maryland, seeking to opt out their children from the presence of LGBTQ-inclusive books in public education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis case is about whether public school education can be a la carte, allowing parents to pick and choose and individually direct curriculums,\u201d said Kelly Parry-Johnson, a senior staff attorney for Advocates for Trans Equality (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/transequality.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A4TE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a nonprofit that fights to protect transgender Americans\u2019 legal and political rights. \u201cThis is at odds with the reality of \u2013 and our American and democratic values of \u2013 a pluralistic society and goals of public education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/fact-sheet-mahmoud-v-taylor-banning-lgbtq-books\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahmoud v. Taylor<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was brought to the Court by six parents objecting to LGBTQ-inclusive children\u2019s picture books in Montgomery County Public Schools, which the district added after following district protocol as <\/span><a href=\"\/fact-sheet-mahmoud-v-taylor-banning-lgbtq-books\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonmandatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplemental learning materials. The plaintiffs claim the books&#8217; mere presence violates their freedom of religion, because they were not given the ability to opt their children out of the classroom with the books.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/media.them.us\/photos\/67fe5d567d95ea390d6e77aa\/1:1\/w_2560%2Cc_limit\/supreme-court.jpg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1920\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perry-Johnson explains a broad opt-out provision \u201ccould lead to exclusion of books that depict the experiences of other marginalized people \u2013 whether based on race, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other characteristics,\u201d a consequence that eight Muslim groups raised in their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/transequality.org\/news\/a4te-urges-supreme-court-uphold-inclusive-curriculum-behalf-lgbtq-muslims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amicus brief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filed with the support of A4TE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn a country where Muslims and LGBTQI+ students alike are being targeted simply for being who they are, it is more important than ever that our taxpayer-funded public schools are learning environments that are safe and respectful of all students no matter who they are or what they believe,\u201d said Gabriel Arkles, A4TE co-interim legal director.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vox<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Ian Millhiser <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/scotus\/408356\/supreme-court-mahmoud-taylor-dont-say-gay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a ruling in the parents\u2019 favor could lead to \u201cDon\u2019t Say LGBTQ\u201d-style restrictions in classrooms around the country. Such a verdict \u201cwould place such heavy obligations on teachers who discuss these topics that it is unclear whether they would practically be able to do so.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Library Association (ALA) and the Banned Books Week Coalition (GLAAD is a contributor) recently announced the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/2025\/04\/ala-announces-banned-books-week-2025-theme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Banned Books Week 2025, which will be held October 5 \u2013 11: \u201cCensorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.\u201d A nod to George Orwell\u2019s frequently banned <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1984<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this year\u2019s theme is appropriate on more than one level. Just this year:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-ends-bidens-book-ban-hoax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Department of Education&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Office for Civil Rights squashed 11 book ban investigations, fired book ban coordinator Matt Nosanchuk, attempted to gaslight Americans into believing book bans are a \u201choax,\u201d and claimed that removing books restores \u201cthe fundamental rights of parents to direct their children\u2019s education.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Trump has <\/span><a href=\"\/annual-celebration-of-libraries-and-library-workers-arrives-amid-funding-threats-to-learning-and-enrichment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">targeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Institute of Museum and Library Services (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookriot.com\/imls-gutted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMLS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/faq-executive-order-targeting-imls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cfederal agency dedicated to funding library services.\u201d Nearly all IMLS employees are on administrative leave, and funding that supports libraries, museums, and literary programs nationwide is in limbo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/military-academies-dei-hegseth-trump-ba9731f24b4eb4bd9c02b568209f97af\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Naval Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, under the orders of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, purged 381 books from its library including classics like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Kill a Mockingbird<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of its themes on race and racism. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dei-army-air-force-libraries-book-purge-c191f572cf62aa99a4dae9c259925626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Army and Air Force<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> libraries are also operating under similar orders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/resources\/media2\/16x9\/full\/1024\/center\/80\/7299b09d-b8f0-43e4-8dba-f52a00bbdee2-large16x9_MontgomeryCountyPublicSchoolsx.jpeg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Montgomery County Public Schools. (Credit: 7News\/File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trump administration\u2019s efforts double down on the book ban trends. In 2024, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/2025\/04\/american-library-association-kicks-national-library-week-top-10-most-challenged-books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> documented \u201c821 attempts to censor library books and other materials,\u201d which the organization notes was \u201cthe third highest\u201d recorded in its more than 30 years of tracking book censorship. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/banned-books-list-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEN America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted more than 10,000 instances of book bans affecting over 4,000 unique titles during the 2023-24 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tasslyn Magnusson, senior advisor to PEN America\u2019s Freedom to Read program, underlines the mental and emotional impact of cases like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahmoud <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the book ban epidemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-935131 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22103503\/Tasslyn-graphic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22103503\/Tasslyn-graphic.jpg 409w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22103503\/Tasslyn-graphic-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22103503\/Tasslyn-graphic-150x188.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBooks teach children about the world beyond themselves and encourage them to have their own thoughts and beliefs. Books empower children to make their own choices and engage in critical thinking,\u201d Magnusson explained. \u201cThis is about making space for everyone; teaching students to understand how different people walk among the world and that not everyone\u2019s experience is the same as their own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors of the books in the case <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarahandianhoffman.com\/statement-on-supreme-court-case-mahmoud-v-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released a joint statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in support of the school district: \u201cAll families deserve to be seen and heard. To act otherwise is harmful and sends a devastating message to students: that their lives and families are so offensive and dangerous that they can\u2019t even be discussed in school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authors Sarah and Ian Hoffman defended the books named in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahmoud<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including their book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob\u2019s Room to Choose, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7266486\/lgbtq-books-scotus-case-jacobs-room-choose-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they \u201cteach self-acceptance and kindness.\u201d Speaking in an op-ed in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7266486\/lgbtq-books-scotus-case-jacobs-room-choose-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the duo noted \u201cthat people have a fundamental right to practice and express their faith,\u201d but not when it comes at the expense of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-935135\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-839x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-839x1024.jpeg 839w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-246x300.jpeg 246w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-768x937.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-1259x1536.jpeg 1259w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-150x183.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-450x549.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1-1200x1464.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22104444\/IMG_8176-1.jpeg 1574w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah S. Brannen, whose children\u2019s picture book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncle Bobby\u2019s Wedding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was also included in the case, wrote in the Boston Globe that she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/VBH0R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penned the story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cfor all of those children with LGBTQ families.\u201d She also expressed concern that the justices read the nine books &#8211; sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sarahsbrannen\/p\/DIcFx-dSodV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art she created<\/a> showing the justices reading them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brannen said that books like hers \u201cdon\u2019t seek to change their readers into something they are not. (Credit: Brady)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas-based student activist and organizer against book bans Da\u2019Taeveyon Daniels admitted he had difficulty finding positive representation in books and elsewhere: \u201cGrowing up as a young queer Black youth in a conservative Southern state often felt lonely and isolating.\u201d Daniels, who was selected as Banned Books Week\u2019s 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bannedbooksweek.org\/honorary-chairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth Honorary Chair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and as one of GLAAD\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"\/20-under-20\/2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 Under 20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d young LGBTQ activists in 2024 for his student advocacy efforts championing intellectual freedom, said his efforts are \u201cabout empowerment and creating a space for others who come from similar marginalized backgrounds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany opponents of LGBTQ-inclusive books have never read these books and have no understanding of the content,\u201d said Daniels. \u201cBut for young people, these books give us a better understanding not only about ourselves, but just as importantly, an understanding of our peers and people NOT like ourselves.
