Pope Francis has <a href=\"\/pope-francis-calls-for-the-inclusion-of-trans-people-in-catholic-practices\/\">repeatedly<\/a> urged acceptance of LGBTQ people and considered how best the Roman Catholic Church can support and minister to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis <\/strong><a href=\"\/releases\/glaad-discusses-meetings-with-pope-francis-and-responds-to-his-passing\/\">said<\/a>: \u201cPope Francis was a transformational leader who included LGBTQ people in historic ways. Having had the honor of meeting with Pope Francis twice, I witnessed first-hand his dedication to make a Church for all, not just some. His principles of empathetic listening, inclusion, and compassion are exactly what this divided world needs right now. When Pope Francis spoke out against the act of criminalizing LGBTQ people and when he famously spoke \u2018who am I to judge,\u2019 he created an example of unity that faith and civil leaders should follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, and 2024, Pope Francis met with GLAAD staff, LGBTQ advocates from Uganda and Ghana-where the LGBTQ community is being targeted by anti-LGBTQ legislation, and transgender people, including transgender actress Nava Mau. God loves you. God made you like this. And the pope loves you. And you&#8217;re. You&#8217;re fine. Don&#8217;t worry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Francis DeBernardo, Executive Director of LGBTQ Catholic organization New Ways Ministry, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newwaysministry.org\/2025\/04\/21\/pope-francis-was-a-gift-to-lgbtq-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cWith simple words and gentle gestures, Pope Francis powerfully moved the Catholic Church to become a more welcoming home for LGBTQ+ people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeBernardo went on to discuss Pope Francis\u2019 work with LGBTQ people, and call out that he wasn\u2019t perfect, but at the end of the day, he prioritized respect and dignity: \u201cIn the area of gender identity and transgender issues, the pontiff adhered closely to the male-female gender binary, referring to any newer understandings of gender identity as \u2018gender ideology\u2019 or \u2018ideological colonization.\u2019\u00a0 His misunderstanding and mischaracterization of gender identity did not, however, prevent Pope Francis from reaching out with compassion to transgender people, continually calling for people to respect the inherent human dignity (of transgender people).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marianne Duddy-Burke, head of Dignity USA, which advocates for LGBTQ Catholics, <\/strong>wrote in the Advocate: \u201cDuring Francis&#8217; Papacy, LGBTQ+ people, our concerns, needs, and gifts became part of the mainstream of the church. We are no longer invisible or voiceless. This is Francis&#8217; lasting legacy for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more about Pope Francis and the LGBTQ community below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2013, Pope Francis stated \u201cIf someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 2023, Pope Francis <a href=\"\/releases\/pope-francis-says-being-gay-not-crime-glaad-responds\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cHomosexuality is not a crime.\u201d He called existing laws in more 60 countries that criminalize same-sex relationships \u201cunjust\u201d and said treating other people uncharitably is a sin.<\/li>\n<li>Also in 2023, Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vatican-lgbtq-pope-bfa5b71fa79055626e362936e739d1d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved blessings for same-sex couples<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vatican-transgender-catholic-baptism-godparents-82120d853570ec92f4db1cbf11ebc2f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> inclusion of transgender people in the life of the Roman Catholic Church, stating they could be baptized, serve as godparents, and be witnesses in weddings.<\/li>\n<li>Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/pope-anglican-presbyterian-leaders-denounce-anti-gay-laws-\/6948825.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said to reporters that laws criminalizing LGBTQ people<\/a> are a sin and an injustice because God loves LGBTQ people. \u201cThe criminalization of homosexuality is a problem that cannot be ignored,\u201d said Francis. He also repeated previous comments that parents should never throw their gay children out of the house.<\/li>\n<li>Pope Francis spoke before hundreds of thousands of Catholic young people in Portugal and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/vatican\/vatican-news\/make-room-everyone-church-pope-francis-tells-young-people-portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave a speech<\/a> that revolved around the theme: \u201cEveryone is welcome in the Church.\u201d He went on to lead youth in a chant of \u201cTodos! Todos! Todos!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/vatican\/vatican-news\/pope-francis-meets-jeannine-gramick-us-sister-known-lgbtq-ministry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met with<\/a> several Catholic LGBTQ advocacy leaders, including DignityUSA, New Ways Ministry. Of note, Sister Jeannine Gramick of New Ways Ministry had previously faced reprimand by prior pope and bishops for ministering to LGBTQ Catholics. Sr. Jeannine Gramick was named \u201cNewsmaker of 2023\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/opinion\/editorial\/ncrs-newsmaker-2023-jeannine-gramick-tireless-advocate-lgbtq-catholics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Catholic Reporter<\/a>, whose year-end review highlighted Catholics on the margins.<\/li>\n<li>Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vatican-transgender-lgbtq-b3d67868504ba701cce09da9ecc94de0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dined with transgender women<\/a> invited to join in the Vatican auditorium as Pope Francis\u2019 guests for the Catholic Church\u2019s World Day of the Poor.<\/li>\n<li>Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaltv.com\/article\/pope-francis-removes-critic-bishop-texas\/45812885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed<\/a> anti-LGBTQ antagonists from their positions of privilege within the Church hierarchy, including Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, whose fierce opposition to LGBTQ people and spreading of conspiracy theories about COVID-19 had divided his diocese, and Cardinal Raymond Burke who attempted to deny LGBTQ people holy communion.<\/li>\n<li>In January 2025, the Vatican approved guidelines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/vatican-approves-italian-guidelines-allowing-gay-men-become-priests-2025-01-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allowing gay men to become priests<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pope Francis <a href=\"\/releases\/glaad-responds-pope-francis-urgent-call-parents-support-their-lgbtq-children\/\">urged<\/a> parents of LGBTQ people to \u201caccompany their children and not hide in an attitude of condemnation.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away.
