Heroes in government, law, and in faith communities, are standing up to enormous pressure by the Trump administration and those emboldened by anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing Up for LGBTQ Protections in Employment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the federal agency established in 1965 to enforce civil rights laws against workplace discrimination in the United States, one judge is not bending to pressure to ignore the rights of some Americans. Karen Ortiz (below) is an administrative judge in the New York District Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following Trump\u2019s inaccurate executive order declaring that there are only two biological sexes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/15\/nx-s1-5349555\/judge-explains-why-she-spoke-out-against-directive-to-pause-lgbtq-cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ortiz started speaking up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When the acting chair of the EEOC repeated the executive order in a press release and directed administrative judges to hold back on cases that alleged discrimination based on LGBTQ status. Ortiz sent an email with the subject line \u201cTHIS IS NOT NORMAL,\u201d to the entire New York District Office. When that email was deleted\u2014not by her\u2014from her outbox, she sent another, writing that she would not compromise her ethics and her duty to uphold the law, that she would not cower to bullying and intimidation.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_934915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-934915\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-934915\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102028\/Karen-Ortiz.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102028\/Karen-Ortiz.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102028\/Karen-Ortiz-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102028\/Karen-Ortiz-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102028\/Karen-Ortiz-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102028\/Karen-Ortiz-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102028\/Karen-Ortiz-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-934915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Ortiz, administrative judge in the New York District Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission<\/span>\u00a0(AP Photo\/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The First Amendment on Military Bases<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virginiamercury.com\/2025\/04\/15\/whitewashing-the-curriculum-aclu-takes-aim-at-department-of-defense-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed a lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), alleging that schools on U.S. military bases have engaged in widespread censorship by removing books and altering curricula related to race, gender identity and sexual orientation, and civil rights. This legal action, brought on behalf of 12 students from six families stationed in the U.S. and abroad, claims that these measures\u2014prompted by executive orders from President Donald Trump\u2014violate students\u2019 First Amendment rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/dodea-book-bans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> details the removal of award-winning literature and educational materials, including <em>To Kill a Mockingbird, The Kite Runner, Fahrenheit 451, Well-Read Black Girl<\/em> and <em>The Antiracist Kid<\/em>, as well as the cancellation of cultural observances including Black History Month and LGBTQ Pride Month. The Department of Defense\u2019s directives also extend to prohibiting references to so-called <\/span><a href=\"\/fact-sheet-for-reporters-term-to-avoid-gender-ideology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cgender ideology\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a term created to diminish the existence of gender diverse people)in school events, yearbooks, and classroom discussions. Critics, including ACLU attorneys and affected families, assert that this campaign amounts to a \u201cwhitewashing\u201d of the curriculum, isolating students from essential perspectives and stifling open dialogue about America\u2019s multicultural social fabric. Plaintiffs argue that these actions deprive students of learning about their own histories and identities, as well as broader American history and diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hundreds of military base students walked out of class last week to protest the anti-diversity moves. It follows smaller protests deployed in February and March, and included about a dozen schools on bases in Europe, Asia and at least one stateside, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2025\/04\/10\/were-going-fight-what-we-believe-military-kids-protest-diversity-crackdown-base-schools-worldwide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">military.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re here and we&#8217;re going to fight for what we believe in, especially when it comes to our education,\u201d a tenth grade organizer said. \u201cOur parents are actively fighting for our country for us to be able to have these rights.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Families suing Defense Dept. over \u2018whitewashing\u2019 curriculum at military schools | NBC4 Washington\" width=\"788\" height=\"443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ildTfVzkmRI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montana Reps Vote \u201cNo\u201d on Criminalizing Transgender Health Care<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Montana, Republican and Democratic members of the Montana House <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/montanafreepress.org\/2025\/04\/08\/felony-bill-for-parents-doctors-of-trans-minors-voted-down-by-bipartisan-house-coalition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted down a bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would have made it a crime for parents and other adults to assist minors under age 16 in accessing transgender health care. The House voted 41\u201357 against Senate Bill 164, which would have expanded the definition of child endangerment to include providing or facilitating gender transition treatments for minors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonbinary Rep. SJ Howell, D-Missoula, one of two out transgender lawmakers currently in the House (along with Zooey Zephyr, D-Missoula), urged a \u201cno\u201d vote on the legislation. Howell described the potential unintended consequences: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of concerns I have about the broadness of this bill, and also the use of felony criminal charges to regulate medical care,\u201d Rep. Howell said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have a lot of tools at our disposal as the legislature to regulate healthcare, but felony criminal charges are not the appropriate tool for that job. Lastly, but certainly not least, this bill has a lot of concern for me about parental rights. At the end of the day, there are a lot of parents of trans kids that are just doing what they believe is best for their kids. This criminalizes those parents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in the session, a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers also voted down House Bill 653, which would have given parents expanded access to their children\u2019s medical records, and House Bill 754, a similar bill. Opponents of the bill argued that the wording of the proposal would endanger children experiencing abuse or neglect at home, including those who are LGBTQ. A separate bill aimed at regulating drag shows also failed to pass in the GOP-majority chamber.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"17 Republicans Cross Party Lines In Montana After NB Rep Howell\u2019s Speech Against Anti-Trans Bill\" width=\"788\" height=\"443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kcFPI75rp_0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriage Equality in Colorado<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/colorado-marriage-equality-ban-repealed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorado has officially repealed its ban on marriage equality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Last week Gov. Jared Polis, who is an out gay man, signed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/SB25-014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB25-014<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into law Monday, also known as the Protecting the Freedom to Marry act. The bill repeals the portion of a Colorado statute that states that marriage is valid only if it is between a man and a woman. That ban on same-sex marriages has been unenforceable since the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obergefell v. Hodges.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2006, Colorado voters approved a state constitutional amendment that defined marriage exclusively as the union of one man and one woman. This ban was overturned in 2024, when 63% of voters supported a new amendment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cColorado is for everyone, no matter who you are or who you love. Last November, the voters got rid of outdated language in our constitution that banned same-sex marriage,\u201d Polis said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/governor\/news\/colorado-all-governor-polis-signs-bill-law-protecting-freedom-marry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis is a long overdue step in the right direction and today\u2019s law I\u2019m signing ensures that Coloradans can marry who they love in our Colorado for all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Colorado law guarantees that same-sex marriage will remain legal in the state, even if the Supreme Court overturns Obergefell. While the federal Respect for Marriage Act requires the federal government and all states to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages performed in other states, it does not require states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme Court Associate Justices <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/gap\/samuel-alito\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel Alito<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"\/gap\/clarence-thomas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarence Thomas<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/10\/05\/920416357\/justices-thomas-alito-blast-supreme-court-decision-on-gay-marriage-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attacked the court\u2019s 2015 Obergefell decision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the court declined to hear a case brought by a Kentucky county clerk. The two justices wrote that the clerk, Kim Davis, \u201cmay have been one of the first victims of this court\u2019s cavalier treatment of religion in its <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obergefell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decision,\u201d which they also described as \u201cruinous.\u201d Justice Thomas also called for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obergefell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be \u201creconsidered\u201d in his concurring opinion to the decision that rolled back <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_934916\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-934916\" style=\"width: 980px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-934916\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102317\/Polis.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102317\/Polis.webp 980w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102317\/Polis-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102317\/Polis-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102317\/Polis-150x84.webp 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/18102317\/Polis-450x253.webp 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-934916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gov. Richardson\/MediaNews Group\/The Denver Post via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protesting Corporations Abandoning Diversity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith leaders in the Black community have called upon pastors to encourage their congregations to participate in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarionledger.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/02\/19\/churchgoers-40-day-boycott-target-dei\/79064355007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40-day boycott of Target<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The 40-day boycott, described as a \u201cfast,\u201d was organized by Rev. Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia, who rallied Christians and Black churchgoers nationwide to abstain from shopping at Target during Lent, starting March 5 and ending April 17.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The boycott is part of a larger campaign pushing back against companies that have abandoned diversity initiatives, and is among numerous efforts by civil rights groups, faith leaders, and others targeting companies that have retreated from diversity initiatives following President Trump\u2019s executive order to rollback diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the federal government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For LGBTQ federal employees and those seeking federal services, these changes mean the removal of programs and policies specifically designed to address and prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The rollback also signals to federal contractors and grantees that programs promoting LGBTQ equity may be unfavorably scrutinized or discouraged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 100,000 people, many from Black churches, reportedly joined the boycott, with faith leaders urging participants to support Black-owned businesses instead. In March Target reported a more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/FsYH9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$12 million in loss market value<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the start of the boycott. Rev. A number of heroic figures at LGBTQ-affirming faith-based communities have <\/span><a href=\"\/anti-lgbtq-incidents-target-religious-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to threats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.\u201d \u2014Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the words that Rev. Mark Suriano used to open his sermon at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congregationalchurch.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Congregational United Church of Christ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Sunday after his church received death threats regarding their Pride flag. Rev. Suriano continued: \u201cI have always loved [this] quote from Martin Luther King Jr., in theory. When he speaks of \u2018an inescapable network of mutuality\u2019 and \u2018a single garment of destiny,\u2019 my heart has always warmed. Mills said she would comply with \u201cstate and federal law.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou better do it,\u201d said Trump, \u201cbecause you&#8217;re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mills replied, \u201cSee you in court.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maine Principals\u2019 Association said it would continue to allow trans girls to compete in accordance\u00a0 with state law. The Trump administration attempted to freeze federal school lunch funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for Maine. Janet Mills (D-Maine) (Photo by Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due Process<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A federal judge is holding the Trump administration in contempt of court for not following a directive to facilitate the return of a man mistakenly arrested and shipped off to a mega prison in El Salvador.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was detained and flown to a prison in El Salvador without being told why he was detained and without the right to defend himself, a violation of the U.S. Constitution\u2019s due process protections. The Trump administration admitted his detention was a mistake, was ordered to facilitate his return to the U.S., but has failed to do so, and made unsubstantiated claims about Abrego Garcia to justify their inaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrego Garcia is among 238 men detained and sent to El Salvador, including Andry Hernandez Romero. But even if they did, she reminds officials that \u201cthey should follow the Constitution, present that information, give us the ability to reply to it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elected officials who are supposed to provide the checks and balances as a co-leader of the government with the executive branch are continuing to hear it from constituents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/lincolnsquare.media\/post\/3lmux3uhlzc2n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chuck Grassley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (R-Iowa) who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cbs2iowa.com\/news\/local\/watch-sen-chuck-grassley-holding-town-hall-meeting-in-southeast-iowa#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hosted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a town hall meeting in southeast Iowa.
