{"id":933834,"date":"2025-04-15T09:00:54","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T13:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glaad.org\/?p=933834"},"modified":"2025-04-15T11:48:53","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T15:48:53","slug":"150-anti-lgbtq-incidents-targeted-religious-communities-in-the-us-according-to-newly-released-data-from-glaads-alert-desk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glaad.org\/anti-lgbtq-incidents-target-religious-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"150+ Anti-LGBTQ Incidents Targeted Religious Communities in the US,  According to Newly Released Data from GLAAD\u2019s ALERT Desk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since June 1, 2022, GLAAD\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"\/anti-lgbtq-extremism-reporting-tracker\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>ALERT<\/em> Desk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has tracked <\/span><b>150+ anti-LGBTQ incidents targeting affirming faith-based communities in the US. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include 54 cases of vandalism, 38 cases of threats and harassment, 37 protests, 7 attempted arsons, 3 assaults, and 2 bomb threats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the access to the full dataset, please contact <\/span><\/i><a href=\"mailto:press@glaad.org\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press@glaad.org<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an update to GLAAD\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"\/new-findings-show-60-plus-anti-lgbtq-incidents-targeting-us-religious-institutions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">original reporting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early 2024, showing 60+ anti-LGBTQ+ incidents targeting religious institutions. Since then, more than 90 incidents have come to light.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half of all LGBTQ Americans (48%) are religiously affiliated, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prri.org\/research\/views-on-lgbtq-rights-in-all-50-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 PRRI poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This same study found that strong majorities of all Americans, including most people of faith, support nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Notable Anti-LGBTQ Incidents Targeting Affirming Religious Communities<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>3\/9\/25: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple people made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/bergen\/2025\/03\/09\/park-ridge-church-receives-threats-over-its-pride-flag-first-congressional-united-moms-for-liberty\/82140305007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death threats <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Ridge, New Jersey, after the local <\/span><a href=\"\/gap\/moms-liberty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moms for Liberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chapter posted about the church&#8217;s Pride flag and falsely claimed it supported &#8220;pedophilia.&#8221; One of the threats claimed that the church must be punished \u201cwith gasoline and a match.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1\/22\/25: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple people sent death threats to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/mariann-budde-rachel-maddow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Episcopal Diocese of Washington D.C., following her sermon during President Trump&#8217;s inauguration where she called for mercy on LGBTQ and immigrant people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>9\/7\/24:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehour.com\/news\/article\/hartford-church-rainbow-pride-painting-vandalism-19759929.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vandalized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Pride-themed walkway leading to the Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford, Connecticut. The graffiti read: &#8220;Fuck f****ts,&#8221; and occurred a week prior to the church\u2019s Pride event.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>8\/17\/24:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person tore down a Pride flag at the home of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleynews.com\/allentown\/its-a-hate-crime-victimized-rabbi-proudly-flies-defaced-pride-flag-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local rabbi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, and blew it up with fireworks. They then x\u2019d out the word \u201cgay\u201d on the flag with spray paint.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>7\/28\/24:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2024\/07\/pride-flags-vandalized-at-pair-of-natick-churches-anti-lgbtq-letters-found.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stole Pride flags and left anti-LGBTQ letters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at two churches in Natick, Massachusetts. At First Congregational Church and Christ Lutheran Church, multiple Pride flags were damaged and replaced with a banner that read: \u201cJesus is King.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>6\/17\/24:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person was arrested for planning a mass murder targeting LGBTQ people, religious institutions, hospitals, schools, and supermarkets in Owosso, Michigan. Police reported that they found an Israeli flag in the suspect\u2019s home with the words &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc12.com\/news\/crime\/authorities-owosso-man-planned-mass-murder-of-homosexuals\/article_0e460c78-bd41-11ef-b1e5-7b9075edf569.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-Jew f****t killer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; and &#8220;death to you all.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fear these incidents aim to inspire, they instead shed light on the heroic figures at the head of these groundbreaking and affirming faith-based communities. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.&#8221; \u2013 Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the words that Rev. Mark Suriano used to open his sermon at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congregationalchurch.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Congregational United Church of Christ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Sunday after his church received death threats regarding their Pride flag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rev. Suriano continued: \u201cI have always loved [this] quote from Martin Luther King Jr., in theory. When he speaks of \u2018an inescapable network of mutuality\u2019 and \u2018a single garment of destiny,\u2019 my heart has always warmed. But this past week, I, for the first time, had the most palpable sense of these ideas in action\u2026 It was a weekend of terror, grief, and [exhaustion.] But, in the midst of all that, the outpouring of support far surpassed the hateful and violent rhetoric against us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remain emotional about this physical manifestation of the \u2018inescapable network of mutuality\u2019 and the \u2018seamless garment of destiny\u2019 of which Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke. I also am overwhelmed by the beautiful truth that what affects one of us directly affects all of us indirectly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evangelical Lutheran Church in America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ECLA) echoed Rev. Suriano\u2019s sentiments. \u201cBullying and discrimination have no place in the body of Christ, but, sadly, reminders are still needed. Jesus\u2019 command that we love one another does not come with a caveat about who we are to love. Recent acts of violence at churches that affirm the LGBTQIA+ community and the congregations\u2019 supportive ministries must not be tolerated. As a church, we must be even more committed to lifting up the dignity, safety and humanity of our LGBTQIA+ siblings or we will be worse off as a church and as a nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rev. Terri Steed Pierce, an out pastor at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2025\/03\/23\/a-new-level-of-anger-demonstrators-disrupt-worship-protest-at-orlando-churches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joy Metropolitan Community Church<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Orlando, Florida, has faced her fair share of hate, including demonstrators trying to disrupt her Sunday service in recent weeks. And that is why politicians and conservatives target the places of safety for which we have fought to create \u2013 within and outside faith-based spaces.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFaith leaders are at an important position in challenging these pathologizing, theocratic interpretations of LGBTQIA+ lives because \u2018God\u2019 is being used again to turn an entire group of people into a target for those already in power\u2026 Their voices and positions are needed and that is why they are being targeted, because affirming and supporting faith leaders are able to speak back against claims that the Divine advocates for harming LGBTQIA+ beings.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ravjotmehek\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ravjot Mehek Singh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a queer Sikh activist and award-winning filmmaker, added on: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a Sikh in post 9\/11 America, the racist attacks I experienced growing up in a predominantly White community left me traumatized and in doubt of my own identity. With my queerness, I get attacked oftentimes by my own community of conservative Sikhs, especially online where I am constantly doxxed and my videos collect thousands of hateful, violent comments. Because of my intersectional identity, I switch between facing threats from Americans and my own community &#8211; creating an often endless loop of hate\u2026 But Sikhi was founded to include all people regardless of gender or social standing, and I hope that the work I do alongside other brilliant advocates helps push for that equality to be acknowledged in its truest form.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no right way to be queer, there is no right way to be Sikh, there is no right way to be American, and anyone who tries to silence the way you exist in this world is a victim that is unable to comprehend the incredible multitudes that you contain. Against this backdrop, Keshet believes that remaining connected to each other across identities and movements is more important than ever.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs an organization committed to the full equality of LGBTQ+ Jews, we know that we cannot ever separate these parts of ourselves,\u201d said Klein. \u201cWe work for a world<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keshetonline.org\/resources\/how-your-jewish-community-can-be-a-safe-haven-for-trans-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free of homophobia, transphobia, and antisemitism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We work to find meaning and strength in this painful moment as many of us navigate rupture, uncertainty, and fear, whether in political spaces in our Jewish communities, and\/or LGBTQ+ spaces.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keshet\u2019s Bay Area Education and Training Manager Rabbi Eliana Kayelle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heyalma.com\/the-jewish-legacy-of-hope-will-see-us-through\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> powerfully to how LGBTQ Jews can find hope in these challenging times. \u201cAs a trans queer Jew this moment has me feeling the legacy of resilience deep in my bones. I\u2019m thinking about Jewish ancestors. Miriam who, while under Pharaoh\u2019s rule, held onto hope, planning for liberation by crafting instruments she would eventually use to dance out of Mitzrayim. Emma Goldman and Hannah Arendt, who remind me of the importance of action even when circumstances look bleak. These ancestors remind me that hope is not false optimism \u2014 it\u2019s the desperate and powerful force that lives in our guts, the feeling that can move us to fight to repair a broken world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m holding onto queer and trans ancestors and changemakers, especially trans women of color, drag queens and butches, who laid the groundwork for the queer liberation movement. The ones who became leaders because they had to. It is because of their work that I can shout: \u2018I am here and I\u2019m not going anywhere no matter how hard you try!\u2019 I think of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy saying: \u2018I don\u2019t need their permission to exist; I exist in spite of them\u2026we have a history, we have a reason to be here. I feel very isolated from people and from the religion itself.\u2019 Another might ask me, \u2018What does it say in the Quran about me being trans?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe beautiful thing is that the Quran doesn\u2019t mention how queer a person has to be or not be to be sentenced to a heaven or a hell,\u201d Johnson stated. \u201cInstead the Quran relays [its message] in terms of action. What are your actions? What are you doing with your life? How are you treating other people?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone has their own interpretation of what the Quran could mean. So I instead respond [to these questions] by addressing the heart. The first thing I say is \u2018you matter.\u2019 I say, \u2018Thank you so much for calling or writing in. You are the most important part of this community. You mean so much. You\u2019re very special. You\u2019re worth something. If for no one else, you mean something to me. I love you and your Creator loves you. Because if your Creator didn\u2019t love you, then they would not have created you and they would not have brought us together.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re giving authority back to that person when you ask questions of them. Take someone who is trans. They have their <a href=\"\/reference\/transgender\/\">dead name<\/a>, that they used pre-transition, and they have their living name or preferred name. If that person is incarcerated, their dead name is continuously said to them. But if someone were to say, &#8216;What\u2019s the name that you would like to be called?,&#8217; it gives a symbol of hope and understanding and compassion. It gives back to that person so now that person is the authority in themselves. And that\u2019s powerful.
