The titles are familiar &#8211; including <em>All Boys Aren\u2019t Blue<\/em> and <em>Gender Queer. <\/em>What\u2019s new, according to ALA, is that 72% of the challenges are coming from organized pressure groups and politicians they work with to falsely claim inclusive books are offensive or inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p>According to Angie Hayden, a cofounder of Read Freely Alabama, a group that provides resources for fighting library censorship, this misrepresentation is the entire strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese groups are seeking to define who is an acceptable and valid human being in public spaces,\u201d Hayden tells GLAAD.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/resources\/extremist-files\/moms-liberty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Extremist groups<\/a> like <a href=\"\/gap\/moms-liberty\/\">Moms for Liberty<\/a> create outrage by mischaracterizing entire books based on single pages.\u201c They will take a sex education book with cartoon depictions of anatomy, and misrepresent it as obscenity,\u201d Hayden explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;ll find a single curse word in a 300 page novel about racial injustice, and label it inappropriate. Obviously these groups are trying to control what people can access and read, and they&#8217;re very willing to villainize and terrorize your local library staff to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The local spokespeople also misrepresent the community at large, and instead are guided by the national extremist groups and pre-selected target titles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 120 titles most frequently targeted for censorship during 2024 are all identified on partisan book rating sites which provide tools for activists to demand the censorship of library books,\u201d ALA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/2025\/04\/american-library-association-kicks-national-library-week-top-10-most-challenged-books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe movement to ban books is not a movement of parents, but a movement of partisans who seek to limit our freedom to read and make different choices about things that matter,\u201d said Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Director of ALA\u2019s Office for Intellectual Freedom.<\/p>\n<p>National Library Week serves as an important reminder of one of our most precious resources, libraries, and the passionate workers who serve their communities. Through funding, libraries <a href=\"https:\/\/bookriot.com\/what-do-libraries-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provide<\/a> people with barrier-free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/2025\/03\/ala-statement-white-house-assault-institute-museum-and-library-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access<\/a> to literature, the Internet, technology, research, and employment assistance, genealogical tools, printing services, informative programming, and more. However, recent <a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/trump-is-trying-to-destroy-libraries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actions<\/a> by the Trump administration threaten to reduce libraries into right-wing <a href=\"https:\/\/bookriot.com\/imls-propaganda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">propaganda outlets<\/a>, leading some to draw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/top-stories\/latest\/trump-smithsonian-institute-museum-library-services-rcna199331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comparisons<\/a> to attacks against institutions of learning and enrichment in 1930s Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Following through on his campaign promise to dismantle the federal government, President Donald Trump in March <a href=\"https:\/\/bookriot.com\/imls-gutted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted<\/a> the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) as part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/continuing-the-reduction-of-the-federal-bureaucracy\/\">executive order<\/a> calling for the gutting of several federal agencies. Sonderling, his recent pick for U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/osec\/keith-sonderling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deputy Secretary of Labor<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/institute-doge-musk-museum-library-services-executive-order-trump-30ebde013ce3e9f97e2f4af72c869c0b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oversee<\/a> the agency. Sonderling released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infodocket.com\/2025\/03\/20\/official-statement-keith-e-sonderling-sworn-in-as-acting-director-of-institute-of-museum-and-library-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> pledging to \u201crevitalize IMLS and restore focus on patriotism,\u201d as well as to \u201cpromote American exceptionalism and cultivate love of country in future generations.\u201d Sonderling has no public record of experience or expertise in library science or education. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-politics-and-policy\/eeoc-says-workplace-bias-laws-cover-bathrooms-pronouns-abortion-rcna149962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted against<\/a> EEOC guidelines that would protect LGBTQ employees from workplace discrimination including access to accurate restrooms and pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/faq-executive-order-targeting-imls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sole<\/a> \u201cfederal agency dedicated to funding library services.\u201d In 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/31\/nx-s1-5334415\/doge-institute-of-museum-and-library-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">institute<\/a> \u201cawarded $266 million in grants and research funding;\u201d money used to \u201chelp staff, fund maintenance and create new programs.\u201d According to EveryLibrary, most <a href=\"https:\/\/action.everylibrary.org\/where_does_public_library_funding_come_from\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funding for public libraries<\/a> comes from municipal taxes, a meager amount that does little more than fund the essentials. The American Library Association (ALA) noted that IMLS funding supports libraries visited by more than 1.2 billion patrons in person every year for just 0.003 percent of the federal budget.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the ALA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/2025\/03\/ala-statement-white-house-assault-institute-museum-and-library-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cautioned<\/a> many library programs and services are at stake, especially those serving people in rural areas. PEN America\u2019s Jonathan Friedman <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/press-release\/gutting-federal-library-and-museum-funding-agency-will-undermine-the-freedoms-to-read-and-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> the IMLS cuts will hinder \u201cthe ability of all people to exercise their freedom to read and learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The budget cuts would threaten services for nearly every community:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interlibrary loan systems such as Massachusetts&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2025\/04\/02\/massachusetts-library-services-threatened-by-trump-funding-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ComCat<\/a>, Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2025\/03\/24\/michigan-libraries-museums-cuts-trump-executive-order\/82588822007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MeLCat<\/a>, New Hampshire\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/l2XUz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHAIS<\/a>, Vermont\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/story\/news\/2025\/03\/27\/vermont-museums-libraries-trump-federal-funding-cuts-historical-society-libraries\/82655825007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLOVER<\/a>, and Wisconsin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/small-wisconsin-libraries-might-be-hit-hard-trump-targets-federal-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WISCAT<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Access to resource databases and supplemental materials. The Oklahoma Department of Education currently provides access to \u201cscholarly articles, magazines, e-books, how-to information and more\u201d through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/20\/oklahoma-public-libraries-tribal-institutions-could-be-hit-doge-cuts-donald-trump\/82547638007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EBSCO<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/small-wisconsin-libraries-might-be-hit-hard-trump-targets-federal-funding\">Wisconsin\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/badgerlink.dpi.wi.gov\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BadgerLink<\/a> connects residents with resources to supplement materials available in K-12 schools, higher education institutions, public libraries, and more.<\/li>\n<li>Access to some libraries\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2025\/04\/01\/mississippi-library-users-feel-federal-funding-freeze-day-after-imls-staff-suspended\/82760935007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hoopla<\/a> digital streaming service, offering patrons and families free movies and videos.<\/li>\n<li>Reading programs that are essential for ongoing education through the \u201csummer slide\u201d and other school holiday periods. Maryland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/southernmarylandchronicle.com\/2025\/03\/31\/maryland-literacy-faces-threat-from-federal-library-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne Arundel County<\/a> library system uses IMLS funding to support summer reading programs and literacy workshops. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/04\/03\/libraries-trump-federal-funding-cuts\/82598580007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio<\/a>, more than 50 libraries have paused their summer reading programs.<\/li>\n<li>Services for the visually impaired, such as Alabama\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/03\/31\/federal-funding-for-alabama-libraries-challenged-on-multiple-fronts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/local\/washington-library-concerned-over-trump-executive-order\/281-c7a33be4-da9e-4f0d-80df-fdac17970123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Talking Book &amp; Braille Library<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/20\/oklahoma-public-libraries-tribal-institutions-could-be-hit-doge-cuts-donald-trump\/82547638007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Career resources<\/a>, including \u201cjob searches and resume workshops.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Resources for vets and their families, such as California\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ilovelibraries.org\/article\/what-does-imls-do-and-how-will-its-elimination-affect-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veterans Connect @ the Library<\/a> program, which provides information \u201cabout benefits, including pensions and post-service employment.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona\/2025\/04\/04\/tribal-libraries-may-lose-funding-as-trump-dismantles-small-agency\/82574884007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Funding<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times-standard.com\/2025\/03\/26\/federal-cuts-to-imls-to-impact-morris-graves-tribal-libraries\/\">tribal libraries<\/a> through IMLS programs such as Native American Library Services: Basic Grants, CARES Act Grants for Native American\/Native Hawaiian Museum and Library Services, and American Rescue Plan for Native American\/Native Hawaiian Museum and Library Services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Book Riot\u2019s Kelly Jensen compiled a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/bookriot.com\/imls-gutted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roundup<\/a> from three dozen states explaining the harmful effects IMLS cuts are likely to have on community libraries. The ALA released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/faq-executive-order-targeting-imls\">FAQ<\/a> more thoroughly explaining Trump\u2019s executive order and its implications. While the FAQ notes \u201cit is unclear how the executive order may impact current or future grant rounds,\u201d libraries nationwide are reporting IMLS grants approved in 2024 are now being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/04\/03\/libraries-trump-federal-funding-cuts\/82598580007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">canceled<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/libraries\/article\/97493-21-states-sue-trump-administration-over-scuttling-of-imls-other-agencies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">response<\/a>, \u201cattorneys general from 21 states have sued the Trump administration\u201d in hopes of blocking illegal efforts to dismantle IMLS and several other agencies. \u201cWhatever the President\u2019s policy preferences,\u201d the plaintiffs argued, \u201che cannot override the congressional enactments that authorize federal agencies, appropriate funds for them to administer, and define how they must operate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Jones, a school librarian in Louisiana and a cofounder of Louisiana Citizens Against Censorship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thatlibrarianjones\/p\/DH61tXAhEz2\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a>: \u201cWithout this funding, patrons and students in the most rural of areas, and those of lower socioeconomic status will be the ones who suffer the most.\u201d Jones, who chronicled her experiences speaking out against book bans, the harassment and death threats she received, and her efforts to combat book censorship and support librarians facing uncertainty threats against their own safety in <em>That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America<\/em>, issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/librarians-trump-administration-cuts_l_67e59789e4b0455df70b3aa2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stark rallying call<\/a>: \u201cThe public needs to wake up before our libraries are gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Communities are starting to heed that call. In Fairhope, Alabama, supporters and city leaders banded together to support Fairhope Public Library after the state library board cut its funding by $42,000 because of two books they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/03\/21\/apls-cuts-funding-to-fairhope-library-due-to-sexually-explicit-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> \u201cviolate new state aid requirements.\u201d In response, Read Freely Alabama created a fundraiser to offset the funding shortfall; an effort that raised nearly $47,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_933549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-933549\" style=\"width: 788px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-933549\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/11102354\/Fairhope-Residents-20250324_193832-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Fairhope residents pack city council chambers to voice support for the Fairhope Public Library. So, we partnered with EveryLibrary who facilitated the fundraising site and decided to do the APLS board&#8217;s job for them,\u201d Read Freely Alabama\u2019s Angie Hayden told GLAAD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no doubt we would raise every penny, but I don&#8217;t think any of us expected it to happen so quickly. The outpouring of support for the public library in little Fairhope, Alabama was overwhelming, and to top it off, we actually exceeded our goal.
