We here at GLAAD stand in <a href=\"\/grief-and-fond-remembrances-for-slain-transgender-man-sam-nordquist\/\">solidarity<\/a> with Sam\u2019s loved ones as they demand justice. News of Sam\u2019s death and the now seven individuals charged in connection with his death was picked up by media in New York, Sam\u2019s home state of Minnesota, and nationally.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times, an outlet with a <a href=\"\/nytimes\">pattern of bias and inaccuracies within their coverage of transgender people<\/a>, also covered the story. One Times <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250215204833\/https:\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/15\/nyregion\/ny-arrests-sam-nordquist-murder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> caught the eye of many LGBTQ people and allies, posted February 15th with a headline calling Sam a <em>trans man<\/em>, which is an accurate description of Sam.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-929881\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103628\/Article-02282025-Picture1.png\" alt=\"New York Times Headline\" width=\"500\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103628\/Article-02282025-Picture1.png 936w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103628\/Article-02282025-Picture1-300x114.png 300w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103628\/Article-02282025-Picture1-768x292.png 768w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103628\/Article-02282025-Picture1-150x57.png 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103628\/Article-02282025-Picture1-450x171.png 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On February 16th, the headline was <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250216040330\/https:\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/15\/nyregion\/ny-arrests-sam-nordquist-murder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changed<\/a> from <em>trans man<\/em> to <em>man<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-929880\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103622\/Article-02282025-Picture2.png\" alt=\"New York Times Headline\" width=\"500\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103622\/Article-02282025-Picture2.png 822w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103622\/Article-02282025-Picture2-300x123.png 300w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103622\/Article-02282025-Picture2-768x316.png 768w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103622\/Article-02282025-Picture2-150x62.png 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103622\/Article-02282025-Picture2-450x185.png 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Late that same day, the headline was again <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250216155229\/https:\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/15\/nyregion\/ny-arrests-sam-nordquist-murder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changed<\/a>, this time from <em>man<\/em> to <em>person.<\/em> Sam and all victims of violence deserve accurate coverage of their lives. At a time when trans people and the word <em>trans<\/em> are literally being <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/glaad.bsky.social\/post\/3lia4xk5j5c2v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">erased<\/a> from government <a href=\"\/releases\/glaad-amplifies-voices-against-removal-of-trans-people-history-from-park-service-website\/\">websites<\/a> due to hate and anti-trans violence is <a href=\"\/releases\/glaads-alert-desk-releases-new-data-on-rising-anti-lgbtq-hate-and-extremism\/\">increasing<\/a>, Sam&#8217;s identity as a man who was trans must not be hidden behind generic language.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-929879\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103617\/Article-02282025-Picture3.png\" alt=\"New York Times Headline\" width=\"500\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103617\/Article-02282025-Picture3.png 936w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103617\/Article-02282025-Picture3-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103617\/Article-02282025-Picture3-768x358.png 768w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103617\/Article-02282025-Picture3-150x70.png 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/28103617\/Article-02282025-Picture3-450x210.png 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Why did the Times <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/glaad.bsky.social\/post\/3lik2xorpcc2f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">change<\/a> their headline about Sam? It appears that the online headline of that story included transgender man from publish time to present (as of February 26th), and the descriptor transgender man was a part of the print headline too.<\/p>\n<p>GLAAD and 100+ organizations and leaders have been calling out the Times\u2019 pattern of inaccurate, biased trans coverage since February 2023. The coalition recently placed a mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/glaad.bsky.social\/post\/3li2y6zkkgc2e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">billboard<\/a> in front of Times\u2019 offices requesting a meeting between leaders from the trans community and Times staff.
