Efforts to ban and criminalize this care are not based in medical nor scientific expertise, and frequently employ intentional misinformation about what health care for trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people may encompass.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/transequality.org\/news\/get-facts-truth-about-transition-related-care-transgender-youth#:~:text=For%20adolescents%2C%20any%20medical%20transition,18%20is%20rare%20and%20individualized.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that: \u201cFor adolescents, any medical transition care such as hormone therapy or puberty blockers are only prescribed based on an individual young person\u2019s needs. Any surgical care for teenagers under 18 is rare and individualized.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article-abstract\/145\/2\/e20191725\/68259\/Pubertal-Suppression-for-Transgender-Youth-and?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows access to puberty blockers during adolescence is associated with a significant decrease in suicidal ideation. Doctors have used these medications safely for decades for cisgender children who experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/blog\/puberty-blockers-for-precocious-puberty.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">precocious puberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opponents of transgender rights, including <\/span><a href=\"\/recap-reality-check-of-president-trumps-week-1-executive-orders-unsafe-actions-and-path-forward\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-equality<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"\/gap\/nancy-mace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">politicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"\/gap\/candace-owens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right-wing<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"\/gap\/ben-shapiro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"\/gap\/jordan-peterson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often use inflammatory mischaracterizations of transgender health care to baselessly raise fear and dehumanize transgender people. It is increasingly common to see these figures intentionally employing false, incendiary terms such as: \u201cmutilation,\u201d \u201ccastration,\u201d and \u201csterilization.\u201d A February 2025 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/fact-checking\/2025\/gender-affirming-care-trans-kids-executive-order-fact-check\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poynter Fact Check<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that these are \u201cclaims that clash with leading medical research and practice.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional false terms and<\/span><a href=\"\/smsi\/anti-lgbtq-online-hate-speech-disinformation-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conspiracy theories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include baselessly asserting that being transgender is an ideology (\u201c<\/span><a href=\"\/term-to-avoid-transgenderism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transgenderism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d \u201c<\/span><a href=\"\/fact-sheet-for-reporters-term-to-avoid-gender-ideology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender ideology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d) or contagious (\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jahonline.org\/article\/S1054-139X(23)00492-5\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/evidence-undermines-rapid-onset-gender-dysphoria-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROGD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d) which has never been proven to be happening or accurate, or the result of indoctrination (\u201c<\/span><a href=\"\/smsi\/anti-lgbtq-online-hate-speech-disinformation-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d \u201c<\/span><a href=\"\/smsi\/anti-lgbtq-online-hate-speech-disinformation-guide\/#groomer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groomer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d- made up terms that weaponize and undermine understanding of actual child abuse).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media should not report or repeat these intentionally false framings of transgender health care and transgender people. If inflammatory rhetoric is being employed by newsmakers, journalists should explain that the use of these terms is not accurate, has no scientific basis, are used to dehumanize LGBTQ people by opponents of LGBTQ equality, and are examples of intentional misinformation about <\/span><a href=\"\/factsheet-evidence-based-healthcare-transgender-people-and-youth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence-based health care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is supported by every major medical association (30+ statements <\/span><a href=\"\/medical-association-statements-supporting-trans-youth-healthcare-and-against-discriminatory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When spokespeople make misleading claims about transgender health care, journalists should challenge them to provide evidence to back up their claims, or not report them at all. Include fact checks in reporting, and interview trans and nonbinary people and include them in coverage regarding trans healthcare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explaining the impact of malicious mischaracterizations of transgender healthcare, the <\/span><a href=\"\/smsi\/2024\/online-hate-tropes-connected-to-offline-harm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 GLAAD Social Media Safety Index<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sensationalized word choice in these tropes is designed to elicit a strong reaction from parents and guardians of young kids \u2014 and also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dangerousspeech.org\/think-of-the-children-dangerous-speech-that-suggests-children-are-in-danger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potentially inspires violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against healthcare providers who are characterized as perpetrating this perceived harm.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLAAD\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"\/alert-desk\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALERT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Desk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has tracked nearly 200 anti-LGBTQ incidents (196) since June 2022 which specifically target health care providers and their patients. These include 85 protests, 29 hateful propaganda campaigns, and six bomb threats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">After one such attack, Dr. Izzy Lowell <a href=\"\/releases\/glaad-releases-data-on-anti-lgbtq-incidents-nationwide-launches-the-alert-desk-a-central-hub-for-data-and-analysis\/\">told<\/a> GLAAD: \u201cOur office was burnt to the ground by arsonists in late 2023, followed by the Texas attorney general\u2019s unlawful attempt to access our patient data. We refused to comply, and will not ever disclose HIPAA-protected data.
