{"id":927598,"date":"2025-01-29T16:35:23","date_gmt":"2025-01-29T21:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glaad.org\/?p=927598"},"modified":"2025-02-04T18:05:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T23:05:29","slug":"fact-sheet-for-reporters-trumps-pardon-of-jan-6th-insurrectionists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glaad.org\/fact-sheet-for-reporters-trumps-pardon-of-jan-6th-insurrectionists\/","title":{"rendered":"Fact Sheet for Reporters: Trump\u2019s Pardon of Jan 6th Insurrectionists"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following his inauguration on January 20, 2025, President Trump issued full <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/granting-pardons-and-commutation-of-sentences-for-certain-offenses-relating-to-the-events-at-or-near-the-united-states-capitol-on-january-6-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commutations and pardons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to those indicted and\/or sentenced in relation to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The order explicitly granted clemency for nine members of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/resources\/extremist-files\/oath-keepers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oath Keepers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and five members of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/24-extremists-anti-lgbtq-advocates#rebelltitem31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proud Boys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two well-known violent extremist groups. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">The Proud Boys, in particular, have been involved in nearly 70 anti-LGBTQ incidents since June 2022, according to GLAAD&#8217;s <a href=\"\/alert-desk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>ALERT<\/em> Desk<\/a>. These include 50+ protests mainly targeting drag shows and local school boards &#8212; and resulting in at least four violent altercations.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jan 6th Insurrection <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/02\/09\/965472049\/the-capitol-siege-the-arrested-and-their-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the injury of approximately 140 law enforcement officers and caused more than $2.9 million in damages, as well as disrupting the peaceful transfer of power.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least 1,575 people have been charged federally for their role in the Jan 6th insurrection, with those sentenced receiving a median prison time of 240 days.
