Extremism and domestic terrorism experts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/fact-checking\/2024\/mass-shootings-caused-by-trans-lgbtq-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tell <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PolitiFact<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that there are no widespread threats of growing radicalization or violence from the transgender population.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accusing people from a small and vulnerable community of mass shooting crimes is an effort to further dehumanize, demonize, and promote fear about transgender and nonbinary people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being less than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2022\/06\/07\/about-5-of-young-adults-in-the-u-s-say-their-gender-is-different-from-their-sex-assigned-at-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the U.S. adult population, transgender people are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/press\/ncvs-trans-press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as likely to be victims of crime. <\/span><a href=\"\/anti-lgbtq-extremism-reporting-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLAAD\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALERT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Desk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has tracked more than 2,100 anti-LGBTQ incidents from June 2022 &#8211; December 2024, including 750+ incidents specifically targeting transgender and nonbinary people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baseless claims about a suspect\u2019s gender identity circulate while there\u2019s national attention on the event, but before there are confirmed key details. When evidence is released showing the suspect was cisgender, inaccurate posts about the suspect\u2019s transgender identity often remain up and continue spreading unverified, dangerous tropes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/rise-far-right-extremism-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Far-right<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/interactive\/2021\/domestic-terrorism-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is increasing and surpasses terrorism committed by others, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politifact <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/fact-checking\/2024\/mass-shootings-caused-by-trans-lgbtq-people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
