{"id":925197,"date":"2024-12-16T10:33:52","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T15:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glaad.org\/?p=925197"},"modified":"2024-12-16T10:59:26","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T15:59:26","slug":"queer-and-transgender-public-officials-tell-glaad-that-bullying-transgender-people-is-not-the-way-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glaad.org\/queer-and-transgender-public-officials-tell-glaad-that-bullying-transgender-people-is-not-the-way-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Queer and Transgender Public Officials Tell GLAAD that Bullying Transgender People is Not the Way Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this month, the GLAAD Media Institute\u2019s Education &amp; Advocacy team traveled to Washington, D.C. in advance of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/victoryinstitute.org\/international-lgbtq-leaders-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victory Institute\u2019s 2024 LGBTQ International Leaders Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to train and consult public officials on how to best message for their constituents and proactively thwart anti-LGBTQ messaging when on the campaign trail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"\/institute\/\">GLAAD Media Institute<\/a> is GLAAD\u2019s consulting, training, and research division of the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 which works to elect to public office pro-equality, pro-choice candidates who are out members of the LGBTQ+ community \u2013 LGBTQ-electeds made history this year, winning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/victoryfund.org\/about\/past-elections\/election-results-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">72% of races<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the General Election in November, a number of the Presidential cabinet picks of the incoming administration have continued to make and regurgitate baseless claims about LGBTQ people, including inflammatory anti-transgender rhetoric and attacks on the broader LGBTQ community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through it all, LGBTQ electeds are using their platforms to fight for good governance, while also combatting harmful, disinformation against the LGBTQ community, predominantly, the transgender, two-spirit, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming community. As the GLAAD Media Institute sat with public officials, transgender activists from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-politics-and-policy\/transgender-advocates-stage-sit-protest-us-capitol-bathroom-rcna183077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gender Liberation staged a sit-in at Capitol Hill<\/a> in response to Sen. Nancy Mace and Rep. Curtis, the daughter to a family of farmers, says she is one of the first trans people in Kentucky to hold city office. Curtis joined Vice President of the GLAAD Media Institute Ross Murray, Consultant Brian Martin, and Associate of the GLAAD Media Institute Lana Leonard to discuss her historic win.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bluesky-embed\" data-bluesky-uri=\"at:\/\/did:plc:g3rokrkfjd2ern3ven6sbxlj\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3ldbq5u32js2a\" data-bluesky-cid=\"bafyreigqvuusgfm3kbrnwl3hkhow7xuitzu2x5fift2s4au6n5ijgftagi\">\n<p lang=\"en\">Last week, I was blessed to attend and speak at the @victoryinstitute.bsky.social International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>It was a humbling and restorative experience to be amongst so many friends and colleagues as we prepare for the fight ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 5 highlights from it \ud83e\uddf5\ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:g3rokrkfjd2ern3ven6sbxlj\/post\/3ldbq5u32js2a?ref_src=embed\">[image or embed]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Emma Curtis (<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:g3rokrkfjd2ern3ven6sbxlj?ref_src=embed\">@emmacurtis.bsky.social<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:g3rokrkfjd2ern3ven6sbxlj\/post\/3ldbq5u32js2a?ref_src=embed\">December 14, 2024 at 11:35 AM<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.bsky.app\/static\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s just who I am,\u201d said Curtis. \u201cFor a long time I thought that if I wanted to succeed or have any sort of impact, I had to leave Kentucky. I couldn\u2019t fathom that I could be trans and be a Kentuckian simultaneously. But over time, I came to realize that those two parts of my identity were equally important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curtis happens to be trans and ran for office because she saw a \u201clack of leadership\u201d on the current council. Like others, Curtis ran on issues that mattered to the people she would eventually serve. For her constituents, that matter was Nicholasville Road.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat road has been a pain for me my entire life,\u201d Curtis said. \u201cMy mom was late to my own birth because she was stuck in Nicholasville Road traffic.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, since losing a friend at a red light on the road, it only reminds Curtis of the people she has lost. Nicholasville Road was also the unifying issue that helped to get Curtis elected. She showed people rather than telling them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She only finds herself confounded when trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming people \u2013 about 1% of the population \u2013 are a prevailing talking point of 2024 campaign strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s bullying,\u201d Curtis said. \u201cI think that at the end of the day, it\u2019s just bullying and cruelty is the point. He is one of the first openly gay Black men to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly, and in that role focuses on the issues his constituents raise without excluding people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henson was called to public office after tragedy swept his town. His knee jerk response was to lead the charge for change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delegate discusses a time when gun violence traumatized the life of a 9-year-old girl in his district who was playing in the park with her friends. While she survived the attack, it was not without significant medical hurdles. In a different district 10 years ago, a similar incident occurred to Brendon Mackey, a seven-year-old, except Mackey didn\u2019t live. He was killed by a stray bullet from \u201ccelebratory gunfire.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, before Henson ran for office, he worked closely with Senator Henry Macky to draft and enact Brendon\u2019s Law. Lorena Austin kickoff Victory&#8217;s Opening Plenary; photo by Lana Leonard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henson ran on other issues, like adding additional bus routes, ensuring all schools have working heat and cooling systems for students, and economic prosperity for all. He says when anti-LGBTQ people in power fearmonger and scapegoat against transgender people and other marginalized communities they are distracting voters from the issues they care about, that LGBTQ people care about too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the main focus is that trans people go through everyday things like we all do, so trying to get to work, trying to pay for groceries, trying to make sure that the car runs because its now winter time and you check your car, it won\u2019t turn over because of the battery,\u201d Henson said. \u201cMy main job is making sure that everyone can get ahead while we\u2019re still in office.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, gun violence is an LGBTQ issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ people \u201care more than two times as likely to be victims of gun violence than their straight and cisgender peers, a number impacted by intimate partner violence (IPV) and anti-LGBTQIA+ bias,\u201d according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lwv.org\/blog\/why-gun-safety-lgbtqia-issue#:~:text=Gun%20Violence%20and%20the%20LGBTQIA%2B%20Community&amp;text=Lesbian%2C%20gay%2C%20bisexual%2C%20and,)%20and%20anti%2DLGBTQIA%2B%20bias.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">League of Women Voters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This disparity grows for Black children (aged 0-17), who are over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradyunited.org\/resources\/research\/disproportionate-impact-gun-violence-black-americans#:~:text=Black%20children%20(aged%200%2D17,(aged%2018%2D24).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13.6 times more likely to die by firearm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> homicide than their white peers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want equal access to the same opportunities as someone who would not be trans or not be part of the LGBTQ community,\u201d said Henson.
