Gender diverse people have existed throughout history and cultures around the world. The growing visibility of transgender and nonbinary people is not an ideology and their existence is not up for debate.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGender ideology\u201d is not a term transgender people use to describe themselves, it is an inaccurate term deployed by opponents to undermine and dehumanize transgender and nonbinary people.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIdeology\u201d describes a political construct and opinion that can be debated, argued about, and can change over time. By inaccurately claiming gender identity is an \u201cideology,\u201d opponents of transgender people and their equality attempt to diminish the real need for legal protections to be treated equally and for social acceptance essential for trans and nonbinary people\u2019s safety.<\/li>\n<li>High profile anti-transgender social media accounts have falsely and harmfully dismissed being transgender and nonbinary as a \u201cpseudo ideology,\u201d \u201ccult,\u201d or \u201cmovement\u201d that should therefore not be believed rather than simply accepted. \u201c<a href=\"\/gender-ideology-definition-meaning-anti-lgbt-online-hate\/\">Gender ideology<\/a>\u201d is frequently used by longtime opponents of LGBTQ equality to support discriminatory anti-LGBTQ bills. Anti-LGBTQ social media accounts use the term to evade platform hate speech and content policies designed to protect LGBTQ users from harassment and discrimination.<\/li>\n<li>In 2025, President Donald Trump used the term &#8220;gender ideology&#8221; in a sweeping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/defending-women-from-gender-ideology-extremism-and-restoring-biological-truth-to-the-federal-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive order<\/a> as part of a nationally coordinated effort to restrict the fundamental rights of transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming Americans.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/gender\/2017\/12\/11\/gender-ideology-tracking-its-origins-and-meanings-in-current-gender-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> shows \u201cgender ideology\u201d as an anti-LGBTQ trope can be traced back to <a href=\"https:\/\/americanjournalnews.com\/gender-ideology-right-wing-transphobia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic conservative groups<\/a> in the U.S. in the 1990s.<\/li>\n<li>Transgender people and the transgender community as a whole are not a monolith and do not represent or subscribe to a single \u201cideology\u201d or political party. Being transgender is just part of who they are, and their experiences vary widely and significantly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>BEST PRACTICES FOR REPORTERS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Refer to being transgender<\/strong>, or refer to the transgender community.
