The organization, which supports gay couples pursuing ethical surrogacy, aimed to promote its annual conference with the post. Shortly after posting, MHB discovered that Instagram had censored the content with <a href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/188848648282410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an overlay<\/a> warning that read \u201cSensitive Content \u2026 This photo may contain graphic or violent content.\u201d When a user taps \u201cSee why,\u201d the overlay reads: \u201cThis post doesn\u2019t go against our Community Standards, but may contain images that some people might find upsetting. We cover graphic content so people can choose whether to see it.\u201d As seen above, clearly the photo is neither graphic nor sensitive. Such instances of wrongful suppression of LGBTQ content are part of a larger, troubling trend: Research <a href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/3479610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shows<\/a> that LGBTQ content is <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2019\/12\/tiktok-disabled-users-videos-suppressed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disproportionately censored<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2021\/08\/how-lgbtq-content-censored-under-guise-sexually-explicit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/business\/instagram-shadowbanning-lgbtq-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shadowbanning<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/2019\/10\/10\/20893258\/youtube-lgbtq-censorship-demonetization-nerd-city-algorithm-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demonetization<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oversightboard.com\/news\/1214820616135890-oversight-board-overturns-meta-s-original-decisions-in-the-gender-identity-and-nudity-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cgraphic content\u201d<\/a> overlays like this one. This incident is particularly upsetting in light of Meta\u2019s failures to mitigate the vast amount of <a href=\"\/smsi\/report-meta-fails-to-moderate-extreme-anti-trans-hate-across-facebook-instagram-and-threads\/\">hate-fueled<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techpolicy.press\/policies-vs-enforcement-whats-up-with-metas-platforming-of-violent-extremist-hate-account-libs-of-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2023\/11\/29\/rise-in-hate-speech-on-social-media-platforms-new-eu-report-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">content<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/meta-downplayed-harmful-content-on-platforms-via-public-reports-2023-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers say<\/a> Meta has allowed to proliferate across its platforms.<\/p><p>After escalation from GLAAD to Meta the warning label was eventually removed. Commenting on the case, GLAAD Social Media Safety Program Manager Leanna Garfield <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/03\/15\/gay-dads-censored-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">observed<\/a> to <em>PinkNews<\/em>: \u201cGraphic content overlays are a valuable tool to mitigate extreme content \u2014 That shouldn\u2019t include something as innocuous as a photo of two fathers with their newborn.\u201d<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_903832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-903832\" style=\"width: 788px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img
