The nationwide survey polled both LGBTQ adults and registered voters (including both LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poll, conducted in late January 2024, surveyed LGBTQ participants about how motivated they were to vote, about the issues candidates should address in the campaign, concerns over the further restrictions of individual rights, candidate preference in the presidential campaign, and about their emotional well-being and sense of personal safety in the current political environment. The poll was conducted two weeks before the tragic death of Oklahoma student Nex Benedict made national headlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Poll results and pollster memos<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.glaad.org\/m\/35651e7dab70f76a\/original\/Pathfinder-LGBTQ-Public-Memo-2-19-2024.pdf\"> <b>here<\/b><\/a><b> and<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.glaad.org\/m\/4c8cd7b7f305fb31\/original\/Pathfinder-Registered-Voter-Public-Memo-2-19-2024.pdf\"> <b>here<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registered voters (which includes LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ participants) were asked about their top priorities. A majority of all voters say they would oppose candidates who frequently speak about restricting access to health care and youth sports participation for transgender youth. 81% say health care decisions for youth should be made by parents. All voter categories surveyed\u2014LGBTQ, registered, Trump voters and swing voters who say they vote for either party \u2014agree that politicians \u201cshould stop focusing on restricting women&#8217;s rights and banning medical care for transgender youth and instead focus on addressing inflation, job creation, and healthcare costs.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>KEY FINDINGS OF THE POLL INCLUDE:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Motivation to vote in 2024<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ registered voters are highly motivated as the presidential and key congressional campaigns approach, with 94% indicating they are definitely (83%) or probably (11%) voting this November.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ voters are eager to participate in the November 2024 election and are positioned to be a decisive voter bloc, much like they were in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/12\/01\/had-lgbt-voters-stayed-home-trump-might-have-won-2020-presidential-election\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 Presidential election.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to analysis in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> LGBTQ voters in 2020 were 7 to 8% of the overall electorate, a turnout that played a decisive role in President Joe Biden\u2019s win in the close contest swing states.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates who frequently discuss restrictions on transgender youth are creating more opposition than support for their campaigns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">53% of both registered and likely 2024 voters say they would oppose &#8220;a political candidate [who] speaks frequently about restricting access to health care and participation in sports for transgender youth.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voters overwhelmingly believe that decisions about health care and mental health services for transgender youth should be made by parents: 81% of likely 2024 voters, 83% of swing voters, and 73% of Trump voters agree.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All categories overwhelmingly agree that &#8220;Republicans should stop focusing on restricting women&#8217;s rights and banning medical care for transgender youth and instead focus on addressing inflation, job creation, and healthcare costs.&#8221; 94% of LGBTQ voters, country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">72% experience negative impacts to their mental health and emotional well-being caused by the The Williams Institute <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/the-2020-lgbt-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early 2020 that nine million LGBTQ adults were registered to vote, about 79% of LGBTQ adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLAAD has been tracking the records of all the major presidential candidates on LGBTQ people and the issues facing our community including Nikki Haley\u2019s LGBTQ record <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/gap\/nikki-haley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Donald Trump\u2019s history of 200+ attacks in policy and rhetoric <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/gap\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLAAD is tracking the Biden-Harris administration\u2019s record on LGBTQ people and policy in our Biden Accountability Tracker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/biden-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLAAD has also tracked how candidates\u2019 false rhetoric and claims against LGBTQ people, especially transgender people, were prominent in recent Republican presidential primary debates, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/releases\/glaad-responds-moderator-at-gop-primary-debate-includes-important-question-about-rising-violence-against-lgbtq-people-but-candidates-ignore-the-issue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/election-2024-third-gop-debate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/releases\/candidates-moderator-ignore-real-lgbtq-issues-opting-to-inject-transphobia-and-disinformation-into-gop-debate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">December<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 2023 election returns in Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio show that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/election-2023-pro-equality-wins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voters marked their ballots in favor of pro-equality candidates and issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and showcased the failure of anti-transgender rhetoric in campaigns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>METHODOLOGY<\/b><\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A nationwide survey of registered voters was conducted by Pathfinder Opinion Research from January 25-31, 2024, with a main sample comprising n=1,000 respondents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, an oversample of interviews was conducted specifically among LGBTQ registered voters. Combining the LGBTQ oversample interviews with LGBTQ respondents identified in the main sample results in a nationwide LGBTQ sample totaling n=869.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviews were conducted online using a national research panel. In the registered voter sample (n=1,000), data were weighted by gender, age, race\/ethnicity, geography, education, LGBTQ identification, and 2020 Presidential vote participation and preference to accurately reflect the correct composition of the registered voter universe. Weighting targets were derived from the 2022 Census<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current Population Survey. Additionally, LGBTQ-identifying respondents were weighted down to 11% of the registered voter sample based on this report estimating this group\u2019s composition within the voting eligible population. The overall credibility interval (a theoretical margin of error for non-probability samples) for this sample is \u00b13.1%. In the LGBTQ voter sample (n=869), data were weighted by gender, age, race\/ethnicity, geography, and education to accurately reflect the correct composition of this universe. Weighting targets were derived from the 2021 Census Household Pulse Survey and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demographic estimates of the LGBT population published by the Williams Institute.
