The Index provides recommendations for the industry at large and reports on LGBTQ user safety across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.glaad.org\/m\/5eba7ae7cc159bae\/original\/2021-GLAAD-Social-Media-Safety-Index.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the full report here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Social Media Safety Index, GLAAD also launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/hate-speech-listing\">Listing of\u00a0Anti-LGBTQ Online Hate Speech<\/a>\u00a0as an additional ongoing tool and resource for achieving greater online safety. Modeled after the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adl.org\/hate-symbols\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADL\u2019s Hate Symbols Database<\/a>, this resource lists anti-LGBTQ conduct and content and creates accountability for the platforms to address it.<\/p>\n<p>Key findings from the inaugural\u00a0Social Media Safety Index\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surveying the current landscape of leading social media platforms, the entire sector is effectively unsafe for LGBTQ users.<\/li>\n<li>Of special concern is the prevalence and intensity of hate speech and harassment, which stands out as the most significant problem in urgent need of improvement.<\/li>\n<li>The problem of anti-LGBTQ hate speech and misinformation is a public health and safety issue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>GLAAD\u2019s SMSI platform responsibility checklist calls for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greater protection of LGBTQ users in community guidelines<\/li>\n<li>Improved content moderation (and multiple related and overlapping areas including hate speech and misinformation mitigation, enforcement, transparency and accountability, user-reporting systems, self-expression, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Mitigating algorithmic bias and bias in artificial intelligence (AI)<\/li>\n<li>Addressing privacy and outing (including data-privacy &amp; micro-targeting)<\/li>\n<li>Overall transparency and accountability<\/li>\n<li>LGBTQ hiring, inclusion and leadership<\/li>\n<li>Engagement of independent researchers and social scientists<\/li>\n<li>Engagement of affected users\/communities, especially underrepresented groups<\/li>\n<li>Promotion of civil discourse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Throughout 2021 and beyond, the SMSI will serve as a tool and resource for social media platforms \u2014 driving forward GLAAD\u2019s mission of achieving LGBTQ platform\u00a0safety. GLAAD will also continue to spotlight new and existing\u00a0safety issues facing LGBTQ users in real-time both\u00a0directly to the platforms and to the press and public.<\/p>\n<p>The Social Media Safety Index was created with support from the Gill Foundation and Craig Newmark Philanthropies.
