In 2022, while swimming for the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Kentucky\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Kentucky<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 200-yard NCAA freestyle championship, Gaines tied for fifth place with University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas, who became the first out trans woman champion in the NCAA women&#8217;s division. Since then Gaines has lobbied against the inclusion of trans women in the women&#8217;s division of sports, been a frequent guest on right-wing media, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwbrandingiron.com\/2023\/10\/30\/high-attendance-and-protests-for-riley-gaines\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travels<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nationwide for <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.13abc.com\/2023\/04\/19\/swimmer-riley-gaines-speaking-toledo-protestors-gather-outside-event\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panels<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advocating against transgender people, and campaigned for anti-trans candidates for public office including<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/story\/news\/politics\/rand-paul\/2022\/09\/28\/rand-paul-kentucky-swimmer-riley-gaines-attack-trans-people\/69524544007\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rand Paul<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/riley-gaines-praises-ron-desantis-as-a-leader-who-has-drawn-the-line-protected-womens-sports\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ron DeSantis<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kim Reynolds, Daniel Cameron, and others.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u2014Appears in a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/w7Lm6016pVw?si=2tppiaEzmBwp3fjh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> on the federal government web site for the HHS&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/womenshealth.gov\/protecting-women-and-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of Women&#8217;s Health<\/a>\u00a0touting anti-transgender policies enacted by <a href=\"http:\/\/glaad.org\/trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Trump.<\/a>\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/womenshealth.gov\/protecting-women-and-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webpage<\/a>, titled \u201cProtecting Women and Children,\u201d\u00a0 employs Trump\u2019s narrow and scientifically baseless definition of sex and asserts that gender-affirming care is a form of child abuse. The department is promoting a rigid definition of sex that excludes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/transgender?utm_campaign=SmartLinks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transgender<\/a>\u00a0identities, falsely framing gender-affirming care as \u201cchemical and surgical mutilation\u201d and targeting trans inclusion in sports. In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/medical-association-statements-supporting-trans-youth-healthcare-and-against-discriminatory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">every major medical association and leading world health authority<\/a>\u00a0supports health care for transgender people and youth. The site section titled \u201cKeeping Men Out of Women\u2019s Sports,\u201d repeats\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/transgender-sports-what-science-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">far-right rhetoric used to justify bans on transgender women athletes.<\/a> In the video\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaines says, &#8220;I am so grateful to see President Trump&#8217;s quick and decisive action to uphold his campaign promised to protect women athletes.&#8221; Gaines has not yet spoken out against <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-rape-carroll-trial-fe68259a4b98bb3947d42af9ec83d7db\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Trump being found liable for sexual abuse<\/a> or for HHS Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/gap\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.<\/a>, facing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/11\/sexual-misconduct-allegations-trump-cabinet-picks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credible allegations<\/a> of sexual assault and misconduct.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwbrandingiron.com\/2023\/10\/30\/high-attendance-and-protests-for-riley-gaines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a speech at University of Wyoming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she &#8220;opened with allegations of an assault at San Francisco State University, made specific note that she was attacked by \u2018men in dresses with beards\u2019 and that she was apparently held ransom along with police officers until she gave the protestors $10.00 each.\u201d Police say her claims are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/riley-gaines-calls-suspension-colleges-investigation-hostage-assault-abomination?t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unfounded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/politics\/2024\/04\/09\/riley-gaines-transgender-female-sports-ncaa-lawsuit\/?t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI believe every single person is entitled\u2014actually\u2014I encourage every single person to play sports,\u201d before suggesting that there is no category of competition that would permit transgender athletes: \u201cI don\u2019t think a third category (for transgender athletes) would suffice. Because at the end of the day, you would still very much have males competing against females.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/riley-gaines-college-athletes-lawsuit-ncaa-transgender-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the NCC with more than a dozen college athletes challenging the organization&#8217;s transgender eligibility policies, claiming they violate Title IX rights by adversely affecting female athletes. The lawsuit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/politics\/2024\/04\/09\/riley-gaines-transgender-female-sports-ncaa-lawsuit\/?t\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the NCAA revoke all awards given to trans athletes in women\u2019s competitions and reassign them to their female contenders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mustangnews.net\/tpusa-hosts-riley-gaines-on-thursday-for-real-womens-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201cReal Women\u2019s Day\u201d holiday on Oct. 10, 2023, chosen for the Roman numerals that denote the day: XX.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trinitonian.com\/2024\/11\/14\/guest-column-my-take-on-riley-gaines-presentation-the-perspective-of-a-non-binary-swimmer\/?t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the country with her \u201cTake Back Title IX\u201d tour aimed at keeping transgender women out of women\u2019s sports<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/riley-gaines-holds-ceremony-girls-volleyball-players-who-refused-play-trans-opponent?t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a ceremony for the Stone Ridge Christian High School girls volleyball team after they forfeited a playoff game because they refused to compete against a transgender athlete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Riley Gaines is the director of The Riley Gaines Center at the Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute receives funding from several Koch family foundations, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation (promotes anti-LGBTQ initiatives, including support for studies and campaigns that oppose LGBTQ rights particularly in the context of education and public policy), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/hatewatch\/2023\/10\/20\/anti-lgbtq-rallies-buoyed-big-right-wing-money?t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DonorsTrust and Donors Capital Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (opposes LGBTQ rights and funds various organizations that push anti-LGBTQ agendas), the National Christian Charitable Foundation (opposes LGBTQ rights, particularly marriage equality and transgender rights), among others. The Leadership Institute president is co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Council_for_National_Policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Council for National Policy<\/a> (CNP), a secretive, Christian Right organization of funders and activists founded in 1981. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Work with Moms for Liberty<\/em>: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/The_Leadership_Institute#cite_note-31\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Leadership Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/gap\/moms-liberty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moms for Liberty (M4L) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organized a School Board Activist Workshop in January 2022, and Leadership Institute facilitated three M4L School Board Activism and Campaign Trainings in February 2022. Leadership Institute was the largest sponsor for M4L&#8217;s national summit in July of 2022, which included Ron DeSantis, Rick Scott, Betsy DeVos and Ben Carson as speakers. Leadership Institute was also a lead sponsor for M4L&#8217;s 2023 national summit, and oversaw trainings for attendees on candidate vetting, grassroots lobbying, communications, running for office, strategic research, vote goals, and media. M4L co-founder Bridget Ziegler stepped down from her position as director in spring of 2021, and was subsequently hired by Leadership Institute to serve as the Vice President of the School Board Leadership Program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article\/riley-gaines-center-launches-project-boycott-support-women-athletes-stand-biological-reality\/26579?t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rileygainescenter.org\/?__hstc=162981347.0d97b048ef8a08b5984204ea736f8d2d.1733505993472.1733505993472.1733505993472.1&amp;__hssc=162981347.1.1733505993472&amp;__hsfp=832949540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project BOYcott<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign to &#8220;celebrate&#8221; female athletes who refuse to compete against transgender women and girls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/fox-news\/over-year-after-her-last-race-against-lia-thomas-riley-gaines-has-built-media-career-trans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeatedly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and falsely claims that trans women pose a sexual and physical threat to cisgender women, both in and out of the environment of athletics. In fact \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/press\/ncvs-trans-press-release\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to be victims of violent crime,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d according to a study by the Williams Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/crime-and-criminal-justice\/bomb-threat-and-hate-speech-against-library-follow-targeted-harassment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encouraged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retaliation against libraries and library staff (including doxxing) that refused to allow speakers to misgender people, a violation of library policy. A bomb threat later forced evacuation of the library and an elementary school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/08\/24\/kentucky-gop-talk-covid-19-response-trans-athletes-in-women-sports\/70657728007\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campaigned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Kentucky anti-LGBTQ gubernatorial candidate<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/glaad.org\/gap\/daniel-cameron\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Cameron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/news\/politics-government\/article279730354.html#storylink=cpy\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his on targeting transgender youth, who make up an estimated 0.7% of Kentucky&#8217;s 13\u201317 population. Says Gaines in an ad: \u201cThis is Lia Thomas. He\u2019s a male that claims he\u2019s a woman \u2026 And this is trans-rights activist Andy Beshear. He vetoed legislation that would ban men from competing in women\u2019s sports. And this is Daniel Cameron. He\u2019s running against Andy Beshear. He\u2019ll protect women and our sports.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/fox-news\/right-wing-influencers-fuel-harassment-against-lgbtq-youth\">With her viral post (and those of Chaya Raichik<\/a> who runs the far-right anti-LGBTQ hate account <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Libs_of_TikTok\">LibsofTikTok<\/a>), fueled<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2023\/09\/26\/trans-homecoming-queen-tristan-young\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harassment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/local\/article279603909.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violent threats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against a<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.today\/2023.09.25-173407\/https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/local\/article279603909.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transgender high school student in Missouri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who was elected homecoming queen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-845623\" src=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27132016\/screenshot-2023-10-12-131939.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"658\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27132016\/screenshot-2023-10-12-131939.jpg 658w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27132016\/screenshot-2023-10-12-131939-292x300.jpg 292w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27132016\/screenshot-2023-10-12-131939-150x154.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.glaad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27132016\/screenshot-2023-10-12-131939-450x462.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/justice-civil-liberties\/organization-central-stoking-panic-against-trans-athletes-now-driving\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encouraged harassment of two high school athletes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both minors, who said they dropped out of competition out of fear for their safety. Riley misgendered them and accused them of cheating simply for competing with other women athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/media\/4006739\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the gender transition of transgender TikTok creator Dylan Mulvaney to blackface: \u201cThis is a man, a man with a fetish, who is gleefully putting together all the stereotypes of women.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/media\/4006696\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Pride merchandise at Target stores and attempted to associate it with satanism saying, \u201cIf you look at the children&#8217;s clothes in Target, they are targeting children. It&#8217;s sick, it&#8217;s perverse, it&#8217;s disgusting. And if you look up this person who they partnered with to do all the illustrations, this person is an open satanist. It&#8217;s criminal what they&#8217;re doing.\u201d<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-check-target-pride-lgbtq-satan-754451602687\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there was nothing criminal about the merchandise and none of the items bore satanic imagery, but images of UFOs and planets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/fox-news\/over-year-after-her-last-race-against-lia-thomas-riley-gaines-has-built-media-career-trans\">Appeared<\/a> on Fox News 29 times, a total time of more than two hours and 38 minutes, between April 2022 and the end of May 2023. She has recently expanded on her platform spreading misinformation about transgender people in sports to include falsehoods about transgender people&#8217;s existence and safety in society, according to Media Matters.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?526366-16\/cpac-panel-transgenderism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participated in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201cPanel on Transgenderism\u201d at the annual CPAC conference. Gaines alleged that trans inclusion in women&#8217;s athletics is just one part of a widespread<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?526366-16\/cpac-panel-transgenderism\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to \u201ceradicate women as a whole,\u201d a conspiracy theory.
