GLAAD continues to document and monitor an alarming rise in such content and behavior across the major social media platforms. The invention of false tropes (often via memes) is a common trend in extremist hate and disinformation, serving as an effective viral strategy for the spread of all kinds of conspiracy theories. The <strong>GLAAD Guide to Anti-LGBTQ Online Hate and Disinformation<\/strong> is an ongoing project to identify some of the most prevalent and egregious terms, tropes, and concepts that are used to harass, attack, and spread malicious misinformation about LGBTQ people on social media. We urge social media companies to use this guide as an authoritative resource for identifying and understanding anti-LGBTQ content, especially as they continue to develop and enforce their hate speech and harassment policies.<\/p><p>This is not an exhaustive list. anti-LGBTQ accounts and similar to the trope \u201c<a href=\"\/transgenderism-definition-meaning-anti-lgbt-online-hate\/\">transgenderism<\/a>,\u201d \u201cgender ideology\u201d <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a malicious rhetorical construct that falsely asserts that LGBTQ \u2014 notably trans \u2014 people are an ideological movement rather than an intrinsic identity. <\/span><\/p><p>As the ADL <a href=\"https:\/\/extremismterms.adl.org\/glossary\/gender-ideology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notes<\/a>, \u201cproponents of the phrase often use it to oppose school curricula that feature and\/or celebrate LGBTQ+ history or experiences, falsely claiming that such materials promote the sexualization of minors and\/or coerce children into identifying as members of the LGBTQ+ community.\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The Southern Poverty Law Center <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/lgbtq-health-care-terms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cAnti-LGBTQ+ groups often employ the term to claim any kind of positive affirmation of trans young people is a nefarious method of creating or recruiting new trans kids.\u201d <\/span>On Twitter\/X, for example, far-right outlet The Daily Wire widely <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/5CSux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promoted<\/a> a speech by anti-trans commentator Matt Walsh, who said in April 2023, \u201cI truly see the fight against gender ideology as the last stand for Western civilization.\u201d Other extremist accounts have used the phrase as a dog whistle to spread animus against trans people. That same month, Gays Against Groomers <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230427051718\/https:\/twitter.com\/againstgrmrs\/status\/1651355541313036290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter\/X: \u201cGender ideology must be completely abolished and destroyed.\u201d<\/p><p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/gender\/2017\/12\/11\/gender-ideology-tracking-its-origins-and-meanings-in-current-gender-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some studies<\/a> researching the origin of the phrase, \u201cgender ideology\u201d as an anti-LGBTQ trope can be traced back to <a href=\"https:\/\/americanjournalnews.com\/gender-ideology-right-wing-transphobia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic conservative groups<\/a> in the U.S. in the 1990s. Researcher David Futrelle\u2019s well-known misogyny tracking site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wehuntedthemammoth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Hunted The Mammoth<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers this summary: \u201cOstensibly, \u2018globohomo\u2019 is short for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Globohomo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018global homogenization,\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an alleged vast conspiracy to destroy \u2018traditional\u2019 culture and values and replace them with a sort of global (naturally) corporate uniculture. But it\u2019s rarely used in this way, at least not exactly. For those who\u2019ve seized upon the term, \u2018globo\u2019 means \u2018globalist\u2019 and therefore Jews; while \u2018homo\u2019 (the suffix) means, well, \u2018homo\u2019 (the slur). In July 2022 multiple platforms including Meta, TikTok and Reddit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/debug\/reddit-post-inspires-calls-twitter-ban-anti-lgbtq-groomer-slur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued public statements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proclaiming that use of the term as an anti-LGBTQ slur was in violation of their hate speech policies; in 2022-2023, multiple companies including TikTok, Google, PayPal, Venmo, Wix, Printful and others have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/2022\/9\/21\/google-bans-anti-trans-hate-group-gays-against-groomers-venmo-paypal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspended social media accounts perpetuating the trope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for being in violation of their hate speech policies. Researchers in the field of online extremism have identified this as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/lgbtp-adding-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">example of an anti-LGBT \u201cPsyOps\u201d<\/a> campaign intended to harm the LGBT community. A 2020 Reuters \u201cFact Check\u201d reports: \u201cThe LGBTQ community does not condone \u2018pedosexuals\u2019 and no groups have shared that they do. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-factcheck-lgbtq-community-p-acronym\/factcheck-thelgbtq-community-isnotadding-p-to-their-acronym-%20idUSKBN2352J8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">These claims are false.<\/a>\u201d A 2020 <em>USA Today<\/em> fact check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2020\/07\/30\/fact-check-lgbtq-community-rejects-false-association-pedophiles\/5462805002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also notes<\/a>: \u201cThe assertion that the LGBTQ community condones or supports pedophilia is not only false, but rooted in a history of bigotry.\u201d As writer John Paul Brammer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/behind-the-weird-internet-scheme-to-associate-pedophiles-with-the-lgbtq-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notes<\/a> in <em>Them<\/em>, \u201cLGBTP\u201d has connections to \u201c<a href=\"\/smsi\/anti-lgbtq-online-hate-speech-disinformation-guide\/#clovergender\">CloverGender<\/a>,\u201d another invented term originating from 4chan that falsely claims that some trans people \u201cidentify\u201d as underage and therefore should be allowed to date minors. The goal is twofold, he writes: \u201cto get cisgender heterosexual people to associate the LGBTQ+ community with sexual predators, and to get the LGBTQ+ community to mount a genuine defense against the accusation that it is harboring pedophiles within our circles, thus, on some level, validating the assertion. An <em>Associated Press<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-check-lgbtq-initialism-letter-added-377564070383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact check<\/a> confirmed in September 2022 that the claim was false. YouTube subsequently demonetized Wheeler\u2019s channel.\n\nBesides being used as a provocative hate-driven trope to generate online engagement for profit, \u201cLGBTS\u201d aims to incite a moral, religious panic and to foster fear of LGBTQ people. Associating groups of people with demonic or other subhuman figures is a known method of dehumanization, which is prohibited by the hate speech policies of the major social media platforms. A 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/tiktok-reddit-ban-transphobic-posts-linked-neo-nazi-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Them<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/tiktok-reddit-ban-transphobic-posts-linked-neo-nazi-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> article<\/a> offers context and a partial transcription of the video: \u201cRoyce said he had \u2018made a new sexuality\u2019 because he was tired of being called transphobic for not wanting to date trans women. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/tiktok-reddit-ban-transphobic-posts-linked-neo-nazi-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Now, I&#8217;m super straight,\u2019 <\/a>he continued. \u2018I only date the opposite gender, women, that are born women. So you can&#8217;t say I&#8217;m transphobic now because that is just my sexuality.\u2019\u201d <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After it found popularity on TikTok, the \u201cSuper Straight\u201d meme went viral on 4chan, a forum popular with members of the neo-Nazi movement, with many \u201cSuper Straight\u201d posts including \u201clogos or flags similar to the Nazi \u2018SS,\u2019\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/super-straight-nazis-4chan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Snopes.<\/span><\/p><p>Here the speaker disingenuously asserts that this \u201cidentity\u201d is a mere neutral (non-hateful) orientation, equivalent to LGBTQ identities and deserving of similar recognition and respect \u2014 and further, that the assertion is not an example of transphobia but simply an earnest expression of self. Like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/identities\/2019\/7\/1\/18761623\/straight-pride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Straight Pride<\/a>\u201d (and other hate-driven ideologies including \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/01\/1102394528\/the-modern-white-power-movement-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White Power<\/a>\u201d) these kinds of arguments are built on a feigned ignorance of real-world societal discrimination against marginalized groups and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2021\/03\/21\/owning-the-libs-history-trump-politics-pop-culture-477203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a well-documented strategy<\/a> of right-wing extremists for sowing discord and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/10\/a-short-history-of-conservative-trolling.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trolling the Left<\/a>&#8220;. In March 2021, <em>Them<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/tiktok-reddit-ban-transphobic-posts-linked-neo-nazi-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that TikTok and Reddit have swiftly responded to the emergence of the trend. Reddit shut down the r\/superstraight subreddit and TikTok deplatformed Royce and shadow-banned the hashtag. It&#8217;s not a belief system.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201ctransgenderism\u201d was notably weaponized in a vicious March 2023 speech by right-wing extremist Michael Knowles at CPAC, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservative Political Action Conference, where Knowles <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/michael-knowles-transgenderism-cpac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pronounced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cFor the good of society \u2026 transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely.\u201d Knowles posted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230306195446\/https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ACrWtj2WWJ4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">versions of the speech on YouTube<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/rkWLc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">variations of the same rhetoric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on his other social media accounts, while disingenuously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/cpac-speaker-transgender-people-eradicated-1234690924\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asserting that his genocidal call was not genocidal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On social media, Knowles and other far-right media figures employ the term (along with other variations of the trope such as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"\/smsi\/anti-lgbtq-online-hate-speech-disinformation-guide\/#gender-ideology\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender ideology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d) to disingenuously evade platforms\u2019 hate speech and harassment policies \u2014 which prohibit speech targeting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with hate on the basis of protected characteristics, such as gender identity, (while speech targeting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideologies<\/span><\/i> is allowed). As an example, this now private, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191006214409\/https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MycgPvadjoY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27-minute video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entitled, \u201cTRANSVESTIGATION of MADONNA \u2014 Undeniable PROOF!!! \u2018SHE\u2019 is a MAN!\u201d constructs this conspiracy theory with a framing asserting that Madonna\u2019s body-type is that of someone assigned male at birth. The video offers a faux-scientific analysis of the pop star\u2019s anatomy which serves as a vehicle for a lengthy diatribe of dehumanizing anti-trans tropes and rhetoric. Although the \u201ctransvestigation\u201d trope is not expressly identified as hate speech by social media platforms, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/what-does-transvestigation-anti-trans-conspiracy-theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts on anti-LGBTQ hate and disinformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including GLAAD) are clear that such dehumanizing attacks on peoples\u2019 bodies and identities are a harmful form of bullying and harassment.
