The two justices wrote that the clerk, Kim Davis, \u201cmay have been one of the first victims of this court&#8217;s cavalier treatment of religion in its Obergefell decision,\u201d which they also described as \u201cruinous.\u201d They also wrote that the decision \u201cenables courts and governments to brand religious adherents who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman as bigots, making their religious liberty concerns that much easier to dismiss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/14pdf\/14-556_3204.pdf\">Dissented in the <em>Obergefell <\/em>case<\/a>, writing that bans on same-sex marriage promote procreation and the ideal environment for raising children. He also wrote that those who oppose marriage equality \u201cwill risk being labeled as bigots and treated as such by governments, employers, and schools,\u201d leading to \u201cbitter and lasting wounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/6\/26\/8851211\/supreme-court-same-sex-marriage\">Wrote<\/a> that neither government denial of marriage equality, nor internment camps, nor slavery, stripped people of dignity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/supct\/html\/02-102.ZD1.html\">Dissented<\/a> in <em>Lawrence v.
