\u2014Introduced<\/a> legislation that would prohibit federal agencies from requiring workers to address other employees using their preferred pronouns that “contradict with an individual’s biological sex.” The introduction to the legislation, titled the Safeguarding Honest Speech Act, reads: “To prohibit the use of funds to implement, administer, or enforce measures requiring certain employees to refer to an individual by the preferred pronouns of such individual or a name other than the legal name of such individual, and for other purposes.” Sen. Rafael Edward Cruz goes by a preferred name, “Ted.”<\/p>\n

\u2014Falsely claimed<\/a> in a Senate hearing about the Equality Act that the bill is about mandating \u201cbiological males\u201d to be allowed to compete in girls\u2019 sports. The term \u201cbiological males\u201d is inaccurate and offensive, as science has shown there is more than one gender than sex assigned at birth. The Equality Act does not specifically address transgender participation in school sports.<\/p>\n

\u2014Led efforts<\/a> to support false claims about the 2020 presidential election and voted against the Electoral College counts in Arizona and Pennsylvania, hours after the deadly siege at the Capitol. Days later, cosponsored a bill<\/a> to \u201cprotect women and girls\u201d in sports. Cruz also voted against<\/a> holding the impeachment trial to investigate the Capitol attack.<\/p>\n

\u2014Endorsed<\/a> Alabama Judge Roy Moore, a candidate for U.S. Senate known for his opposition to gay marriage. Moore was credibly accused<\/a> of child predation and assault, Cruz stated that the landmark Supreme Court decision granting marriage equality was \u201ceven worse\u201d than the Court decision in the 1850s that upheld slavery.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Said<\/a> he believes that \u201cengaging in homosexual conduct is a choice<\/a>, and I do not believe that unelected judges should force States to adopt gay marriage, against the wishes of the people. Marriage is a fundamental building block of our society, and I have a proven record of standing and fighting to protect traditional marriage between one man and one woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Said he supports marriage \u201cbetween one man and one woman\u201d but that \u201cit\u2019s a question for the states.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2014Reintroduced the State Marriage Defense Act in 2015<\/a>, which would leave it up the states to define marriage.<\/p>\n

\u2014Criticized Dallas Republican Mayor Tom Leppert for the city\u2019s Pride celebrations<\/a>: \u201cWhen a mayor of a city chooses twice to march in a parade celebrating gay Pride, that\u2019s a statement and it\u2019s not a statement I agree with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which extended protections to lesbians, gays, immigrants and Native Americans.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2014Said in a 2015 speech<\/a>: \u201cThere is a liberal fascism that is dedicated to going after believing Christians who follow the biblical teaching on marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Urged states to ignore the Supreme Court\u2019s Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em> decision<\/a>, saying states not named in the case are not bound by the ruling.<\/p>\n

\u2014Said of Kim Davis,<\/a> a Kentucky county clerk jailed for defying a court order and refusing to issue marriage licenses to qualified same-sex applicants, \u201cToday, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny.\u201d He went on to falsely claim<\/a> that \u201cfor the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith.\u201d Cruz added: \u201cI stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally.\u201d<\/p>\n
