\u2014Strongly opposed<\/a> marriage equality: \u201cProtecting the institution of marriage is a critically important issue and one I\u2019ll defend in Congress. I firmly believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. I support the NC Marriage Amendment on the May ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Joined a congressional letter<\/a> to President Trump insisting that the United States not include sexual orientation and gender identity language in a North American trade agreement, insisting that \u201cit is especially inappropriate and insulting to our sovereignty to needlessly submit to social policies which the United States Congress has so far explicitly refused to accept.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014A key proponent of banning transgender people from the military, reportedly threatening<\/a> not to vote for a military appropriations bill unless the trans ban was enacted.<\/p>\n

\u2014Said<\/a> of transgender men and women using the restroom: \u201cMen need to use the men\u2019s restroom. Women need to use the women\u2019s restroom. For over 200 years, we haven\u2019t had a problem defining that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Suggested<\/a> that affirming marriage equality would \u201cusurp the authority of Congress\u201d and ignite a \u201cconstitutional crisis\u201d: \u201cWell I mean obviously we start to have a constitutional crisis. We\u2019ve already seen some of that with the executive branch saying that they\u2019re not going to enforce certain laws. I think it was Justice Scalia that brought this out in the last couple of days is when you get an executive branch that starts to decide what\u2019s constitutional and what\u2019s not and what they\u2019re going to enforce and what they\u2019re not, they\u2019re usurping the authority of Congress and that\u2019s the representative form of government and we can\u2019t stand for that, as a people we can\u2019t stand for that so we need to stand up and make sure that our voice is heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Insisted<\/a> he was running to stop President Obama\u2019s pro-equality values: \u201cFrom Obamacare, to our state\u2019s upcoming marriage amendment, President Obama has run roughshod over Western North Carolinians\u2019 values, and I\u2019m running to stop him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Described<\/a> anti-LGBTQ hate group leader Tony Perkins as \u201ca dear friend\u201d who \u201cunderstands that the battle here in DC is a spiritual battle in the heavenly realms.\u201d (audio begins around 40:00 mark)<\/p>\n

\u2014As chair of the House Freedom Caucus, called on<\/a> President Trump to repeal guidance protecting transgender students in public schools and no discrimination protections in the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n

\u2014Co-sponsored the so-called Marriage and Religious Freedom Act, which is designed to<\/a> allow nonprofits to discriminate without reprisal.<\/p>\n

\u2014Co-sponsored<\/a> failed attempts at a so-called Federal Marriage Amendment.<\/p>\n
