\u2014Nominated to be Drug Czar but withdrew nomination<\/a> after legislation he sponsored hindered the Drug Enforcement Administration in its fight against the U.S. opioid crisis and \u201chelped pump more painkillers into parts of the country that were already in the middle of the opioid crisis,\u201d according to The Washington Post <\/em>and 60 Minutes<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u2014Opposes marriage equality<\/a>: \u201cTom believes that marriage is between man and woman. He supports the Defense of Marriage Act, a law enacted by President Clinton that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman and makes it clear that no state is forced to recognize a homosexual marriage sanctioned by another state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014Said<\/a> in an American Family Association of Pennsylvania survey that he considers the United State Supreme Court\u2019s marriage equality decision to be neither constitutionally sound nor the law of the land; also voiced opposition to extending civil rights protections to LGBTQ people.<\/p>\n

\u2014Answered<\/a> a Christian Coalition survey in support of a federal marriage amendment banning marriage equality.<\/p>\n

\u2014Co-sponsored<\/a> so-called Marriage and Religious Freedom Act, a bill that would allow organizations to discriminate against LGBTQ people without penalty.<\/p>\n

\u2014Voted against<\/a> a measure that would have barred federal contractors from holding government contracts if they discriminate against LGBTQ people.<\/p>\n

\u2014Indicated<\/a> support for the military\u2019s discriminatory \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d policy.<\/p>\n

\u2014Resigned<\/a> from his position as U.S. Attorney amid a corruption investigation.<\/p>\n
